Historia
In this revelatory memoir, doctor Cynthia Li shares the truth other doctors don’t always understand and often won’t share if they do - that chronic illness is complicated, and that treatment is not just a matter of test results and prescriptions but requires a more comprehensive approach. By sharing her own struggle with a disabling autoimmune crisis, which forced her to question her own conventional medical training and embrace the integrative principles of functional medicine, Li reveals the insider knowledge sufferers need to truly begin healing - mind, body, and spirit.

Delivers as expected
Revisado: 02-08-22
Given my expectations of this book I was not disappointed and have recommended this book to others. I saw Dr. Li in an interview once briefly and feel that the narrator they chose to deliver the story was perfect . I can't remember exactly what Dr. Li sounded like, so when I heard the narrators voice I had to do a double take to see if it was Dr. Li or someone else doing the reading.
As some reviews have stated, there isn't a lot of practical "how to" type info until the very end and that's correct. If you look at the title it reads as if it will be a story about Dr. Li, something to listen to and enjoy, and maybe learn from, and that's exactly what it is. It's not a text book or a manual on how "you" can heal, yet there is still some of that in there... bonus!. Toward the end of her book she does talk briefly about a few special cases which perhaps you can identify with. She also does give what I would consider a "cheat sheet" for health based on her experience at the very end that may be worth tracking down the physical book for. I would certainly love to have seen a pdf to go along with the book. Then again, if you don't know what she went through to arrive at that list, it may not make sense. Plus, each person is unique.
It's a very personal story and I could appreciate how much Dr. Li was willing to share about her experience. The story goes by really fast and it's a good introduction to the concept of functional medicine from the side of a skeptic doctor no less, providing hope for those like myself who can relate to her experience. I only wish she were on the east coast.

Simple actionable tips - Love it!

At times I felt that I could have been the subject of this book it so closely resonated with me in almost every way. I love that he did not focus on medication. I agree that medication can sometimes help you focus.. but sometimes it's on the wrong things. I would challenge anyone interested in jumping right to medication, if you can cross off all of the suggestions in this book and still feel medication is necessary then hell yeah. I gave this book to a friend's son who I believe is very ADHD and never diagnosed but wants to be tested so he can get medication, and you know a doctor will it. Seems to me there is much more to ADHD than being able to focus and this book did a great job of giving you a bigger picture of life with ADHD.

I can't wait to listen to it again..
Revisado: 09-13-18
I am not a listener of fiction. I am more of a information/reference/learn-something while listening kind of person. However, I remember hearing about this book years ago on NPR and I thought.. why not. It was awesome! I loved the story and the characters..I hope there is another one some day. I think I am now spoiled due to the full cast reading though.

Very practical and informative
Revisado: 01-17-18
I liked the structure and content of this audio book. This is my first audio book that's set up as a course. It can be sped up a little to save time and still be easy to listen to. There are great examples and great logic. I am only halfway through it and I already can't wait to go back and start over and work along with the included materials so I can take notes. I think the instructor is great!
