no feeling
Revisado: 02-14-25
the reader is told how much these characters love each other but there's no feeling. and it comes out of nowhere. it's awkward. the reoccurring theme of them not sharing enough or keeping secrets from each other is insane. they've known each other a month. Matthew is 1500 years old, is he supposed stand on a podium and monologue his entire existence to a near stranger?
he absolutely should have told her about Juliet, a nut job he broke it off with over a hundred years ago and that he thought was dead. and it doesn't matter that there was no organic opportunity that the topic came up. one month is way too long to not divulge you're entire history. (sarcasm)
also not a fan of all the control issues occurring in this relationship.
their entire relationship lacks feelings and doesn't seem believable.
the plot is interesting.

lacking
Revisado: 02-08-25
Key moments felt rushed. Huge battles killing tens/hundreds of thousands feel like little skirmishes. aside from text telling us all these people died the author fails to convey the right feeling for the moment.
The whole time traveling plot aside, time passing is not well done. the writing feels like a day or days but the storyline is suddenly months or years further.
The relationships between the characters felt contrived. The King was pointless, the sibling pair was pointless.
Something was lacking here.
The story has some good bones but is missing a lot of muscle.

great! except
Revisado: 10-18-24
Enjoyable. well written. great characters. good storyline but very predictable. a few things didn't quite add-up or weren't explained - such as how the beast escaped the tower after being magically sealed in it for 900 years.
also the trial of the princess was absolutely awful. it detracted from the story and was painful to get through. when you get to that part do yourself a favor and skip ahead.

Historia
The man who became known as Esrahaddon is reported to have destroyed the world’s greatest empire—but there are those who believe he saved it. Few individuals are as divisive, but all agree on three facts: He was exiled to the wilderness, hunted by a goblin priestess, and sentenced to death by a god—all before the age of eight. How he managed to survive and why people continued to fear his name a thousand years later has always been a mystery...until now.

Historia
Years ago, the magnificent dragon queen Tintaglia forged a bargain with the inhabitants of the treacherous Rain Wilds. In exchange for her protection against enemy invaders, the humans promised to protect an unhatched brood of dragons. But when the dragons emerged as weak and misshapen hatchlings unable to fend for themselves, dragonkind seemed doomed to extinction. When even Tintaglia deserted the crippled young dragons, the Rain Wilders abandoned the burden of caring for the destructive and ravenous creatures.

Once, dragons ruled the Rain Wilds, tended by privileged human servants known as Elderlings. But a series of cataclysmic eruptions nearly drove these magnificent creatures to extinction. Born weak and deformed, the last of their kind had one hope for survival: to return to their ancient city of Kelsingra. Accompanied by a disparate crew of untested young keepers, the dragons embarked on a harsh journey into the unknown along the toxic Rain Wild River.

short. incomplete

the storyline is fine and characters are good. but it's only half a story. as part of a series I understand there is more to come in future volumes but I'd like each book to have some sort of theme or direction or conclusion. this one just ends with nothing resolved. it feels like half a book

rape scene was disturbing and unnecessary
Revisado: 07-04-24
Everything wrapped up a little too nicely and too quickly. three books to put everyone's lives into chaos and then two chapters to fantastically fix it all. the rape of Althea was not integral to the plot and was disturbing. it was completely unnecessary

Historia
Everyone expected Violet Sorrengail to die during her first year at Basgiath War College-Violet included. But Threshing was only the first impossible test meant to weed out the weak-willed, the unworthy, and the unlucky. Now the real training begins, and Violet’s already wondering how she’ll get through. It’s not just that it’s grueling and maliciously brutal, or even that it’s designed to stretch the riders’ capacity for pain beyond endurance. It’s the new vice commandant, who’s made it his personal mission to teach Violet exactly how powerless she is–unless she betrays the man she loves.

not worth the time
Revisado: 03-16-24
ugh. the first person writing is painful. the main character is whiney and annoying. the whole book is sex and fighting. there are no surprises. everything is incredibly predictable. there are conflicting themes - value for human life is low, cadets die left and right and it's normal and expected. killing others to get ahead is practically encouraged. some how only the main character is bothered by deaths and breaks emotionally when get friends die or are at risk, which is contrary to the rest of her community. she's constantly brining up her frail body but never loses a fight or physical challenge. and the underlying theme of leadership hiding the existence of magical enemies doesn't make sense

great teen read
Revisado: 02-19-24
The Target audience for the series is teens. And with that in mind it's a stand out series and this installment was great.
it is well written. the characters are well developed and the plot is interesting.
As an adult reading a teen series I do sometimes find the conversations in the book and the thoughts of the protagonist hard to swallow. And some plot twists have me rolling my eyes...
The Prince is supposed to be 13-15yrs old, yet his side of the conversation sounds like a seven year old. It was just awkward. The entire palace scene was pretty awful.
But I can't be clear enough that this was a light-hearted and enjoyable listen for any age.

Revisado: 01-10-24
Great all around.
It's predictable. And that's ok. Fantasy is a genre wherein all books have similar themes. And this fits right in. The story is interesting. The characters are well developed and likeable. The writing is smooth. Great narration.
