For me, this was a story about the misunderstanding of the people you think you know the best and grief. Something that hit very close to home for me. The way the story weaved between the timelines and characters was so well done. I especially enjoyed the way it was littered with easter eggs. Worth the listen.

More Than the Headlines

This book, like Hillary herself, took on a ton of media criticism and attracted a lot of bad jokes, yet this book was a lot more than just a story of a campaign gone off the rails. More than a memoir of life in politics. It's a well-rounded story about the many aspects of her life, all of which are often only shown to us through a specific lens. It is also somewhat of a guideline for the Democrats, mainly those who will be taking her place in the next election cycle. It also seems meant to help change the uniformed voters into ones who will put in the effort and become informed voters in four years. It offers up some of the inner workings of an election built upon several broken but intertwined systems. Hillary's writing here is poignant, and left me feeling like the world had lost its chance at something much better than what it has found itself stuck with now.

Interesting and well read, but felt abrupt and focused more on the starting of McDonalds

This was a really great story, but felt like it was more the story of McDonalds than Ray and Joan. It really focuses on that for about the first half of the book, and then quickly covers some of the couples story and abruptly ends. Wasn't what I expected, but it was interesting and kept me listening until the end. Worth a listen.

Creative (creation?) dystopian novel

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would definitely recommend this audiobook to a friend. The performance was consistent and well-paired to the novel. While the author's version of a future hijacked by religious doctrine is well thought-out and a terrifying but fascinating thing to imagine.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Definitely Pastor Bob, it's like Buddy Christ from Dogma but with speaking power.

Have you listened to any of John Bedford Lloyd’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have never heard any other performances by the narrator so I cannot compare.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

When all religion breaks loose, the messiah's return will not be televised.

Good performance, predictable story

Where does Looking for Alaska rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

For performance Looking for Alaska ranks close to the top as the narrator does a great job of creating different but well-suited vocal personalities for each main character. The story however is ranked somewhere along with an airport novel. Predictable plot-lines and narrative along with pretty cookie-cutter characters didn't do much to inspire me, but it was well enough written that it worked as a background story to listen to without having to focus on it constantly.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

The ending wasn't much of a surprise, but it did bring everything to a tidy conclusion well enough to satisfy.

Have you listened to any of Jeff Woodman’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Can't compare, as I've never heard any of the narrator's other performances.

No extremes for me.

A delightful learning experience

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I definitely would recommend this audiobook to a friend. The instructor (narrator) begins by outlining the best way to follow along with the lessons and if you do as he instructs by keeping a vocabulary notebook, you'll be sure to finish with an increase in your lexis. However, the course is so well done that I don't believe it would be necessary for everyone to do so. Just listening while you do some mindless tasks will be sufficient. The instructor provides context for each words usage and meaning in a very engaging and jovial fashion. I really felt connected to the teacher. I found it so interesting that I managed to complete the entire recording in just three days!

What did you like best about this story?

The instructor! He made the lessons so fun I would do several lessons each day..

Which scene was your favorite?

No scenes really, so I couldn't say.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It made me laugh several times, but not at the absurdity of the lessons. I found myself laughing quite often at the stories the instructor used to help explain each new set of words. Laughing while you learn is always a win!

Any additional comments?

If you are worried that the vocab is going to be very basic, don't. Take the risk and buy the lesson. I consider myself a very well-read person with an above-average vocabulary and still found I didn't know a lot of the words. Several words I believed I understood actually had slightly different meanings, which these lessons clarified for me.

Frank and well-rounded book

Where does The Wal-Mart Effect rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I'd put it in my top 5 for books of this genre. For a book built on a lot of facts, figures, and scientific studies, the author has mixed just enough anecdotal material and interesting background on the "characters" that it doesn't sound like you're being read textbook material. Instead, it feels like we are being told the life story of Walmart by the narrator and through the eye of the people who knew it best.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Wal-Mart Effect?

Learning just how frugal and strict the company is even within the executive staff over the years was pretty memorable. The image of such a powerful CEO having held meetings in an office furnished with mismatched office furniture and lawn chairs was powerful in a lot of ways, but still somewhat absurd to picture.

Which character – as performed by Alan Sklar – was your favorite?

There weren't really characters, as it was a non-fiction book, but as per my earlier personification, I guess Walmart was my favorite.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

It really was. I had to convince myself to get some sleep before work or I probably would have finished it in one go.
