This book tries to be about everything: racism, bullying, sexual perversion, voyeurism, addiction etc etc and the result is a melodramatic mess that is exacerbated by the overwrought narration.

I kept comparing this book to Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow - an engaging, well written coming of age story following an awkward, perhaps brilliant, definitely flawed young man from childhood to middle age - and unfortunately it pales with that comparison. Like the character namesake, the story of George was enjoyable, at times funny & poignant but ultimately transient and forgettable.

New characters, new locale, same Tana French: eerie, moody, utterly compelling . Will definitely return to hear more from Cal

The only thing interesting about this book is the king Lear analogy. I suffered through over 20 hours of a breathy sing-song narrator waiting for something to happen. Skip it!

For the life of me I can’t figure out why people love this book so much. Maybe my negative reaction stems from the fact that I was listening about the woman in Moscow while reading about the gentleman and Amor Towles is just a far better writer and storyteller? Either way, I found myself repeatedly put off by the simplistic and lazy writing (I lost track of the “anyway” transitions) and the forced and corny dialog (like something out of Turner Classic Movies: “say there bub!”). Meanwhile, the characters are little more than tropes (flashy Ruth vs demure Iris reminiscent of Scarlett vs Melanie) and there are far too many whirlwind romances and loves at first site. Not to mention hundreds of pages of set up (with far more talk of taffeta than tradecraft) that gets a deus ex machina resolution within the span of one chapter, via a character introduced at the 11th hour, with a big twist you can see from a mile away. So unsatisfying.
