Historia
In his early forties, nonprofit writer Tip Murray is just getting past the wreckage of his youth and settling into semi-humdrum married New England domesticity. Things take an unusual turn when he receives shocking news from his high school best friend, hippie farmer Natalie, that one of their former teammates from speech team, Pete, has committed suicide. Surprisingly mentioned in Pete’s final Facebook post? A devastating comment made to him by their speech team coach, Gary Gold.

Affecting tale of forgiveness and friendship
Revisado: 01-08-24
I highly recommend Speech Team by Tim Murphy. It is a well-written, affecting tale of memory, friendship, and forgiveness. And it is funny too! The audio version is superbly narrated by Daniel Henning. I have read and listened to all of Tim's books, including Christodora and Correspondents. His novels are all very different in tone and subject matter, but engaging too.

Historia
In the waning days of the Civil War, brothers Prentiss and Landry—freed by the Emancipation Proclamation—seek refuge on the homestead of George Walker and his wife, Isabelle. The Walkers, wracked by the loss of their only son to the war, hire the brothers to work their farm. Prentiss and Landry, meanwhile, plan to save money for the journey north and a chance to reunite with their mother, who was sold away when they were boys. Equal parts beauty and terror, The Sweetness of Water is an epic whose grandeur locates humanity and love amid the most harrowing circumstances.

Superbly narrated poetic story

Excellent telling of post Civil War story of two ex-slaves and small farm family. The story is told with compassion and empathy. I admired how the characters still respected each other despite the conflict between them.

Average mystery ruined by narration

Not as good as others by this author. Unfortunately, you can hear narrator swallow, clear throat, etc. The producer should have caught and fixed this.

Historia
The Poisonwood Bible is a story told by the wife and four daughters of Nathan Price, a fierce, evangelical Baptist who takes his family and mission to the Belgian Congo in 1959. They carry with them everything they believe they will need from home, but soon find that all of it - from garden seeds to Scripture - is calamitously transformed on African soil. What follows is a suspenseful epic of one family’s tragic undoing and remarkable reconstruction over the course of three decades in postcolonial Africa.

Interesting story but poor narration
Revisado: 07-10-22
I liked the story, but this book is poorly produced and narrated. The book has a single narrator who just reads the book rather than telling the story using voice inflections to differ the characters.
This book is told from the perspective of 4 women and would be better served by multiple narrators or a more talented one.
Audible should consider re-recording this book.

This transcendent story follows four college friends who move to New York City, buoyed by ambition: Willem, an aspiring actor; JB, an artist; Malcolm, an architect; and, at the center, Jude, a withdrawn, brilliant attorney haunted by an unspeakable past. Gobsmacked by A Little Life
Revisado: 06-28-22
Rarely, has a novel provoked so many contradictory emotions. I found the book amazing, frustrating, moving, pretentious, and brilliant - at the same time. There were many parts that were difficult to experience but the characters envelop you in unexplainable ways. A Little Life bowled me over. I recommend it to the patient reader, but buckle in for an emotional roller coaster.

Historia
A New York Times Top 10 Book of the Year and National Book Award finalist, Pachinko is an "extraordinary epic" of four generations of a poor Korean immigrant family as they fight to control their destiny in 20th-century Japan (San Francisco Chronicle). In the early 1900s, teenaged Sunja, the adored daughter of a crippled fisherman, falls for a wealthy stranger at the seashore near her home in Korea. He promises her the world, but when she discovers she is pregnant - and that her lover is married - she refuses to be bought.

A Refreshing and Entertaining Mystery
Revisado: 01-25-22
One of the best mysteries I have read in a while. Intricate plot, lots of suspects, sophisticated characterizations, and it is really funny.
Kept me guessing until the end. I picture Maggie Smith and Leslie Manville (who narrates the book wonderfully) could be in the movie.

At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves. The story is told by Cyril’s son Danny, as he and his older sister, the brilliantly acerbic and self-assured Maeve, are exiled from the house where they grew up by their stepmother.
