Historia
In this revelatory, authoritative portrait of Donald J. Trump and the toxic family that made him, Mary L. Trump, a trained clinical psychologist and Donald’s only niece, shines a bright light on the dark history of their family in order to explain how her uncle became the man who now threatens the world’s health, economic security, and social fabric.

short on info, long on anger
Revisado: 07-29-20
I had hoped to hear some new facts. Unfortunately no. Mostly anger at Trump. Surprising lack of knowledge about how real estate transactions work, how estate planning and taxes work. Most telling is the (paraphrased here) "i will do anthing to bring him down". Her hatrid for Trump overcomes any education she has. Mostly psycho babble.

Spolller Alert!
Revisado: 03-27-15
What would have made The Lost Get-Back Boogie better?
A story.
What do you think your next listen will be?
Unknown.
Have you listened to any of Will Patton’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Yes. Always love to hear his voice.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Lost Get-Back Boogie?
All of them.
Any additional comments?
Spoiler alert: Nothing really happens, then the book stops with no ending. I guess there wasn't really a need for an ending, since there was no plot in the book anyway. I've listened to all of the Burke/Patton books before this one and liked or loved them.

Historia
The story begins in 1962. On a rocky patch of the sun-drenched Italian coastline, a young innkeeper, chest-deep in daydreams, looks out over the incandescent waters of the Ligurian Sea and spies an apparition: a tall, thin woman, a vision in white, approaching him on a boat. She is an actress, he soon learns, an American starlet, and she is dying. And the story begins again today, half a world away, when an elderly Italian man shows up on a movie studio's back lot - searching for the mysterious woman he last saw at his hotel decades earlier.

It's all connected.
Revisado: 12-17-13
If you could sum up Beautiful Ruins in three words, what would they be?
Very good read. I thought at first that there were several stories, but in the end they all turn out to be connected. Very enjoyable. Great short stories in and of themselves.
What other book might you compare Beautiful Ruins to and why?
City of Dreams. (But don't bother with the abridged version, and there is no unabridged audio version, so read the book)
What does Edoardo Ballerini bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
His recounting of the Donner Party. The descriptions of the battery emplacements in Italy left over from WWII. His stories about Richard Burton (true or not, you've got to believe that he really was like he was described)
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I laughed a lot. Especially at the Italian innkeeper's attempt to make his village a tourist stop, complete with beach (which he tried to build) and a tennis court high on the cliffs above his inn.
Any additional comments?
Loved it.

Historia
In modern-day London, architectural historian and recovering alcoholic Annie Kendall hopes to turn her life around and restart her career by locating several long-missing pieces of ancient Judaica. Geoff Harris, an investigative reporter, is soon drawn into her quest, both by romantic interest and suspicions about the head of the Shalom Foundation, the organization sponsoring her work. He's also a dead ringer for the ghost of a monk Annie believes she has seen at the flat she is subletting in Bristol House.

Sadly, I wish I'd liked it
Revisado: 07-18-13
What disappointed you about Bristol House?
I never quite connected with the female Indiana Jones/Robert Langdon/Benjamin Franklin Glass character who didn't have the background of those three. Even so, she still managed to figure out all the unbelievably impossible clues, including how to decode "aaaaaa..." using Hebrew, English, left to right, no right to left, every 5th word, leave out the vowels, etc. but never figured out why she was picked for such a mission.Don't worry about the plot. You'll never figure out who is doing what and why. It's all revealed in the last chapter anyway.
What do you think your next listen will be?
Islands of Profit in a Sea of Red Ink
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
Decent reading of the characters.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
I was disappointed in the story. I loved City of Dreams (the book not the audio book). Maybe too much pressure to crank out a book every year or so to write another City of Dreams?

Would you try another book from David Deutsch and/or Walter Dixon?
Liked the narrator. Would not read another Deutsch book.
What do you think your next listen will be?
A mystery.
Would you be willing to try another one of Walter Dixon’s performances?
yes
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
none
Any additional comments?
Out of over 150 Audible books, I have only given up on one, and that was of poor audio quality. This may be number 2. The book was recommended by an Audible Email. I don't really know why. It reads like a college text book. Jumps from subject to subject. One interesting tid bit in a chapter.

Historia
This magnificent novel by one of America's finest writers is the epic of one man's remarkable journey, set in 19th-century America against the background of a vanishing people and a rich way of life. At the age of 12, under the Wind moon, Will is given a horse, a key, and a map, and sent alone into the Indian Nation to run a trading post as a bound boy. It is during this time that he grows into a man, learning, as he does, of the raw power it takes to create a life, to find a home.

Historia
If Ridley Jones had slept 10 minutes later or had taken the subway instead of waiting for a cab, she would still be living the beautiful lie she used to call her life. She would still be the privileged daughter of a doting father and a loving mother. Her life would still be perfect, with only the tiny cracks of an angry junkie for a brother and a charming drunk with shady underworld connections for an uncle to mar the otherwise flawless whole.

It's hard to believe a character that knows captains of industry could be so boring. If you want to listen to a sleeper that explains who everyone is in the last chapter, great. Save some time. Listen to the first and last disk. You won't miss much.

great book, but abridged ...
Revisado: 11-10-05
I loved the book. However, this abridged version is much too short. The books spans a couple hundred years, and there are dozens of characters. I could follow the story just fine, but I can imagine that someone who did not read the book would come away with his head spinning. It's really a shame, too. Almost all the characters in the book are fleshed out nicely. In this audio book, barely is a character introduced, and he's gone. Hopefully, an unabridged version will be recorded.

I enjoyed the story. It was not inspired, but an OK read. Then, at the end in an interview with the author, I found out that he really believes there is a conspiracy! What a load.
