In my opinion, this was a creative and novel way to continue this story series. Some people reviewed the story as not being as positive as other books in the series but I found it to be well written, well delivered by the narrator and a real "gripper" of a story. I'm extremely happy how this plot went and the continuation of the main characters' stories. Highly recommend the read even if you haven't read the previous books, it holds its own.

To further the story of the Where the Hell is Tesla story, this one does the trick! Rob brings his characters back to life and animates the entire tale for laughs, entertainment and just plain fun. Bobo makes a return, and there are now children playing with time (unintentionally) and the "old man" Tesla himself is there to make the adventure interesting. If you need an emotional lift and a good twist to your thinking processes, get and read or listen to this book!

These short stories mix the most entertaining twists of plot with a truly realistic point of view by the characters. I guess the phrase I'm looking for is 'real speak' in fantastic situations. Rob's stories have amazing plots with last minute twists and zings that I find extremely refreshing in the genre. No top-heavy slogging serious fantasy themes, these stories develop serendipitous flashes of inspiration into realistic "what ifs". I also find that despite some stellar narrators doing his audio work that Rob tells his stories best.Every quip or exasperated sound is perfectly rendered in his narrations.

I mentioned "real speak". The characters speak in terms you'd expect to hear real people caught in the same situation within real life, so if realistic expression of frustration (i.e.occasional expletives NOT deleted) bother you, then perhaps Rob's books are for someone else. For me, the characters' realistic expressions are the very things that engender suspension of disbelief and bring the stories to life. I heartily recommend this book of short stories with great introductions to each explaining where the ideas for them originated. Please get this book and enjoy it.

First, Khristine Hvam makes Jane Yellowrock and the the other characters in this story come to vivid life, thank you Khristine for your awesome narration and story telling magic!

Second, Dark Queen is likely the "deepest" story Faith Hunter has written regarding this world and the people who live in it. I wrote "LIVE" because they do, literally seem to be alive as the listener travels through the story.

Dark Queen sees Jane making what she wants happen with the magic artifacts she acquires, running them through her own shape shifter magic to accomplish her intent. She and her adoptive family formally become a recognized blood clan, and Alex seems to be growing into a man in this book. Not much in the way of "stinky" for him these days. As usual, trouble comes knocking on her door, in this case a man claiming to be her long lost blood brother, which she believes - NOT. The long anticipated grand duel between the emperor of Europe and the Master of the City of New Orleans finally arrives and the arrangements made for it are very carefully laid for any eventuality. We lose a few beloved characters during this hectic round of duels and the grief of their passing is very well written. Despite how things look on the surface, this story leads to all kinds of possibilities for future books in Jane's world though much of it will have changed a great deal. Beast is always "Best Ambush Hunter" and helps Jane out in unexpected ways when Jane needs the help most. There is humor, sadness, and an unending refusal to let wrongness prevail in Dark Queen. And Jane becomes what she was ordained by her latest artifact, to be - A Queen of Magic.

Wow! This series started quietly and emotionally as Nell Ingram fought for her sense of personhood and independence from the church cult she'd been raised and married young in. As the series continued, Nell's inner strength and ability to take calculated risks helped her to develop even more into her own person while becoming involved, as an agent, with PsyLED, a paranormal law enforcement group. In forming new relationships with non-church members and becoming more urbane, Nell began to develop paranormal abilities of her own that added value to her membership in the psyLED team. In this book, Flame in the Dark, Nell breaks all her constraints and becomes an awesome character, helping her little sister, Mud, who is a lot like her in terms of paranormal abilities, her team members and even a very powerful supernatural creature Nell reports to at work during a time of extreme crisis for the creature. The story is invigorating, powerful and full of emotional punches that make the reader feel really good inside about getting to know Nell and vicariously participate in her successes. My recommendation is to get and read this book as fast as you can, then take a moment to let Faith Hunter know how you feel about her Soulwood series

Anne Bishop's "the Others" series begins with this book, which is an excellent blend of world building AND story development.

A special group of females see prophecies when they are cut, and a whole business develops around selling these prophesies to wealthy clients. This book tells the story about "the one who got away" and develops the tale of the "others" (shape shifting natives of the planet) who take her in, despite her seeming innocence and how badly her recently died hair smells to them! This book develops characters that will grow steadily in the next few books in the series, endearing themselves to the readers as they go along.

I admit I am an avid fan of the Foreigner world and generally eagerly anticipate each new book in the series. The books run in arcs of three (how felicitous!) and this installation brings big changes in the role Bren Cameron plays as interpreter. He no sooner gets back to the planet after concluding agreements with the Kyo, he is sent to his home island to break the news to their government that they need to expect about 5,000 Reunion station refugees. He's got his hands full laying out strategy with old allies, and obstructionist adversaries including his predecessor, Wilson.

The book alternates between two views - what Bren is doing on the mainland and what is happening with the young Aiji who was sent by his father, Tabini Aiji, to visit his uncle Tatiseigi where all kinds of interesting developments occur to test his maturity and judgment. I recommend this book as an excellent groundwork for the next arc of books in the series. Loads of intrigue and possibilities.

I love the writing in this entire series but the voice in this last of the Lakeside Courtyard stories takes on a very dark and realistic tone as its nemesis pursues the worst in human nature. Officer Montgomery's wayward and uninvited brother arrives in the Courtyard, is told to leave by Simon and others in the courtyard council before he even lays down his bags but the Elders interfere, wanting to know why the shifters think this human is such a threat to them and their courtyard. Tying Simon's hands this way, opens up the courtyard to Lt. Montgomery's brother's (Jimmy) trouble making, and it's not minor mischief.

Jimmy, unlike his brother, Monty, is incredibly base, violent, a bully and a manipulator whose "voice" in this book is realistic, crude and scary as you listen to the audiobook. Makes the reader want to reach out and throttle him! This story is all about how "Jimmy" is handled and what it teaches to the Elders who insisted he be allowed to stay for observation. Meanwhile, Meg and Simon continue to try and work out the puzzle of their growing relationship, Skippy makes a giant leap in his development and Sam is learning about pack politics with the pup pack.

Alexandra Harris does an amazing job in reading these characters, and adds much of the individuality expressed in them.

A refreshing perspective about a community that has learned to live with an apparently dormant UFO that landed in the middle of their town. There's a precocious young girl full of curiosity and smarts who decides to help a special agent sent to investigate not the UFO but the community. As the story proceeds, there's a wild plot twist toward the end that leaves the reader surprised, considering how banal the investigation seems to be prior to the surprise. Great quick sci-fi read.

I'm an ardent fan of Nalini Singh's Archangel series.

In this story, the lead characters begin to mature, especially Elaina but Raphael as well. They become more dimensional as they navigate their lives together as powerful beings and how they relate to other people, no matter their social station. Of course, there's the love thing between these two characters but I look for more than just the romance in any story. Recommend it to Nalini fans.
