I loved this series and the third book did not disappoint. The romance story line had all the feels and did a great job executing the usual historical romance tropes. But this book has so much more. The FMC was strong,
smart and purpose driven. It is inspiring and fascinating to imagine what it must have been like to be an educated woman who defied societal norms at that time, much less a woman of color. I loved the historical context, the South American and Caribbean cultural references, and situating successful people of color and gay characters in this historical period. All while giving us the swoons and tropes we want if we like historical romance.

The Bridge Kingdom series is such fabulous storytelling. The rich and detailed world building from the first four books continues, but Danielle Jensen brilliantly pulls it all together as side plots from earlier books now take on new significance. I loved getting a better understanding of how Ahnna felt about everything that happened. And James is such a great character whose back story explains his personality and is well crafted for the overall plot. Ahnna and James are great together and would make a great team if only . . .This book is all about political, rather than war, strategy so it gave this book a different quality and kept me engaged, unlike some fantasy series that become stale after several books. I loved (and hated!) the plot twist and didn’t see it coming. I can’t wait for the final book to see how all of these amazing couples create lasting peace.

I loved this book. I read it just to get closure on the series, expecting more of the same, and was pleasantly surprised. It had all the things I loved from the first three books but a different quality that kept me fully engaged. It probably reads more like a romance than a fantasy. It was mainly about Nesta’s personal growth and her relationship with Cassian, her sisters, and her friends. Excellent character development allowed me to empathize with Nesta even as she did horrible things, and gave realistic insight into how she overcame her pain and self loathing. The sex scenes are more explicit than the first books PG versions so don’t read if that’s a turn off but I read romance so they were fine for me. And from an artistic perspective they worked given Nesta’s intensity and the way she used sex to numb her pain. All in all Sarah Maas did not disappoint.

I Cant Get Enough of Ari and Jihoon

This was such a fun story with loveable characters, I couldn’t stop listening. The K-pop context was entertaining. But I don’t know anything about K-pop other than it does have millions of screaming obsessed teenage fans around the world. For me Ari was so relatable from her avoidance of feelings and people pleasing at work to the way she self sabotages when she is afraid. I worked at a corporate law firm and her professional journey felt very realistic. So did the family dynamics. And we all want to believe our favorite celebrity is like Jihoon, a thoughtful artist who is human and has the same personal and professional hopes as the rest of us. The story line was sweet and the dialogue witty and smart. I am a woman of color but not Asian and I loved the insights into Asian identity. I am definitely going to listen again. And I want a sequel (seems like there were hints of something between Kit and Hannah) so I can see more of Ari and Jihoon as they navigate life. And I want a Netflix movie - not a series (I love K dramas but the time commitment is too much lol). Overall this is a feel good story at its best. Great job to Lily Chu. And Phillipa was the perfect narrator. Her voice is smooth, pacing and intonation perfect, and voices distinct but natural.
