Historia
Having recovered from the wounds of battle and having won for himself a fortune, a crew, and a longship, Thorgrim Night Wolf makes ready to leave the Viking town of Dubh-linn for the long journey back to his home in Norway. But the gods have other plans, and Thorgrim and his men wash up in the small Viking longphort of Vík-ló. Thinking themselves among friends, they soon learn that the opposite is true - that Grimarr Giant, the Lord of Vík-ló, has reason to want Thorgrim and his son, Harald, dead.

Viking Valor, Vengeance, and Vindication
Revisado: 04-08-16
I did not expect the story to carry forward with the strength of description, continuity of plot, and complete closure without trite wrap ups. The writing did not disappoint. Oh, I lied. I was disappointed that it ended.

I not sure I could have stayed with this story without already having an interest in Irish independence. I appreciated reading of the main character's journalism career. It would have been better to threshout her career to develop her character more.

Historia
In the wake of an earthquake, the water level of an Icelandic lake drops suddenly, revealing the skeleton of a man half-buried in its sandy bed. It is clear immediately that it has been there for many years. There is a large hole in the skull. Yet more mysteriously, a heavy communication device is attached to it, possibly some sort of radio transmitter, bearing inscriptions in Russian. The police are called in and Erlendur, Elinborg, and Sigurdur Olii begin their investigation, which gradually leads them back to the time of the Cold War when bright, left-wing students would be sent from Iceland to study in the "heavenly state" of communist East Germany.

I was really looking forward to this book. While it was very good, well performed, and interesting historically, I was hoping for more of a geology connection.
Another great read! Thank you.

Operation Nowhere To Run
Revisado: 05-14-15
I really enjoyed reading this. I should have read this, however, in the winter. Some books are very sensory rich, and can be enjoyed even more by immersing yourself into the story elements. This would be a great read while traveling in Iceland, flying on a trip to a new, unfamiliar country, or during a snowstorm, stuck at home. The quick pace kept me interested throughout the tale. I want to hike on Vatnajokull. I want to learn Icelandic. I want to write.

Historia
Under the Glacier represents Nobel laureate Halldor Laxness at his entertaining and brilliantly inventive best. Philosophy, theological speculation and charming wit combine to make this novel a timeless fable of modern times. A youthful emissary of the Bishop of Iceland travels to the beautiful and mysterious district of Snæfellsnes, locally known as "Under Glacier" to investigate the affairs of the parish and its enigmatic pastor.

Let me read this again !
Revisado: 05-03-15
Because I am only beginning my reading of Iceland's great books, I had underestimated this book's impact on me, over other reads. It is one of those stories, perhaps like Iceland itself, that I can't let go in my thoughts. My only regret is that the next time I read it, it will not again be the first time. Unforgettable. Provocative. Timeless.

Historia
Fans of Patrick Taylor's bestselling Irish Country novels know Dr. Fingal Flahertie O'Reilly as the irascible senior partner of a general practice in the colorful Irish village of Ballybucklebo. But there was a time, shortly after arriving in Ballybucklebo, that Dr. O'Reilly was not widely accepted by the villagers. This touching short story tells of how O'Reilly, with a little help, began to overcome their objections.

A short study for a longer work?
Revisado: 03-19-14
Would you try another book from Patrick Taylor and/or John Keating?
I am committed and enthusiastic to read and/or listen to Taylor's work. Being in a location that cannot yet receive internet access, I thoroughly enjoy audiobooks and podcasts downloaded in town. In this way I can still feel connected to the service of online access to resources not readily available in our regional library.
Has Home Is the Sailor turned you off from other books in this genre?
I enjoy this genre, and the author's work. In comparison to the longer works of Taylor, I was not as satisfied. No author, I expect, can universally satisfy the devoted follower when the format changes so drastically from other successful work, in the eyes of this reader.
Have you listened to any of John Keating’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
The reader and the reading were up to par with the other works, and equally satisfying in presentation/delivery.
Could you see Home Is the Sailor being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
No, not as successfully as Taylor's other works. Players would, of course, depend on the extent of the commitment to other works that would require a longer-term commitment to the roles. I would not necessarily drive the selection by stars firstly. I would recommend that those, known or unknown who wish to portray the roles be given full run to embrace the characters.
Any additional comments?
Keep up the good work.
