Did not know the history
Revisado: 01-05-22
Well written with excellent descriptions of the history and culture during this time period. I learned much of what life was like for African Americans and women after the civil war into the 20th century. The story itself was fascinating. The narration was excellent.

Historia
Since she was nine years old, Alina Dziak knew she would marry her best friend, Tomasz. Now 15 and engaged, Alina is unconcerned by reports of Nazi soldiers at the Polish border, believing her neighbors that they pose no real threat, and dreams instead of the day Tomasz returns from college in Warsaw so they can be married. But little by little, injustice by brutal injustice, the Nazi occupation takes hold, and Alina’s tiny rural village, its families, are divided by fear and hate. Then, as the fabric of their lives is slowly picked apart, Tomasz disappears.

Had a hard time putting down
Revisado: 10-26-21
Really enjoyed this book. The performance made it very real. I have read many books taking place during WWII. It was informative hearing stories from the perspective of the Christians during occupation.
One has to wonder how many more stories there are to tell. It was hard for so many after the war and many including my father could not share their experiences.
The characters are well drawn and complicated as are we all.

Historia
Forty years’ accumulation of art, antiques, and family photographs are more than just objects for Stanley Peke - they are proof of a life fully lived. A life he could have easily lost long ago. When a con man steals his houseful of possessions in a sophisticated moving-day scam, Peke wanders helplessly through his empty New England home, inevitably reminded of another helpless time: decades in Peke’s past, a cold and threadbare Stanislaw Shmuel Pecoskowitz eked out a desperate existence in the war-torn Polish countryside, subsisting on scraps, dodging Nazi soldiers.
