Just such a boring book
Revisado: 04-21-25
I really wanted to like this book but I was just so bored. It never really delved deep into any one particular story of a spy or spies or stories of MI6 or CIA. Needless to say I was very disappointed

Historia
Gail Baines is having a bad day. To start, she loses her job—or quits, depending on whom you ask. Tomorrow her daughter, Debbie, is getting married, and she hasn’t even been invited to the spa day organized by the mother of the groom. Then, Gail’s ex-husband, Max, arrives unannounced on her doorstep, carrying a cat, without a place to stay, and without even a suit. But the true crisis lands when Debbie shares with her parents a secret she has just learned about her husband to be. It will not only throw the wedding into question but also stir up Gail and Max’s past.

Historia
The Cleverley family live a gilded life, little realising how precarious their privilege is, just one tweet away from disaster. George, the patriarch, is a stalwart of television interviewing, a 'national treasure' (his words); his wife, Beverley, a celebrated novelist; and their children, Nelson, Elizabeth, Achilles, various degrees of catastrophe waiting to happen. Together they will go on a journey of discovery through the Hogarthian jungle of the modern living where past presumptions count for nothing and carefully curated reputations can be destroyed in an instant.

I love John Boyne but this book was not for me
Revisado: 03-12-25
This book was torture for me. I have read almost all John Boyne books and loved them but this book was dreadful for me. It rambled on and on with a few pages of humor.

I can’t go on with this book
Revisado: 02-26-25
This book is so dreadful I quit after 60 dreadful chapters. Just a heads up that each chapter is about 10 minutes and written at about a 5th grade level and drags on and on and I have no idea where this ridiculous book is heading. Do yourself a favor and don’t waste a credit.

Historia
Cyril Avery is not a real Avery - or at least that's what his adoptive parents tell him. And he never will be. But if he isn't a real Avery, then who is he? Born out of wedlock to a teenage girl cast out from her rural Irish community and adopted by a well-to-do if eccentric Dublin couple via the intervention of a hunchbacked Redemptorist nun, Cyril is adrift in the world, anchored only tenuously by his heartfelt friendship with the infinitely more glamourous and dangerous Julian Woodbead.

This book is just another winner from John Boyne. His lyrical prose and quick wit are never disappointing. A wonderful story and beautiful read!

Dreadful book
Revisado: 01-29-25
I read Ordinary Grace by this author so chose this one thinking it would be another great read. The reviews on Goodreads were mostly positive. Honestly, I must have listened to a different book because this was awful. The first 20 chapters were just a bunch of people “walking around” trying to solve a mystery that no one really cared about and the last few chapters- mystery solved, and again about people you don’t care about. The story was stupid. Save yourself the misery.

Historia
As a doctor, I walk a dangerously delicate balance of being compassionate but not overly invested. The same is true in my personal life - love is a luxury I can’t afford. It isn’t until Dr. Westin Grant breaks down all my walls and offers me a future, I find myself wondering if I’m brave enough to risk my heart. When who I was and who I’ve tried to become collide during my clinical trial, the fate of one patient changes everything.

Waste of time
Revisado: 01-19-25
Started out really good and you think that you have a great book ahead but then mid to late book the story just ends. It’s like the author gave up when she had nothing left to say. Waste of time - don’t bother. Only saving grace is the narration.

Not for me
Revisado: 11-21-24
This book was not for me but the performance was good. The book was very slow and tedious for me. The premise of the story itself could have been so much better but the writing was just slow and I never really cared about any of these people.
