Fantastic look at history by someone who was there
Revisado: 02-04-23
I was mesmerized by Leventhal's review of world events. I watched them live on TV, he was there. Aided by his volumes of "reporter's notebooks," I, as a listener, felt nothing was left out and even enjoyed the side stories never before reported. I actually couldn't stop listening and having it in my library I will listen to it again.

I couldn't turn it off.
Revisado: 06-24-22
This is a mesmerizing law drama with more twists and turns than the roller coaster. If you remember "A Time To Kill" you will be reintroduced to many of the same characters with the addition of a teenage boy charged with murder and his family and their issues. Jake Brigance is at his best when his back is to the wall and he needs to pull a legal rabbit out of his top hat. He does that and more. Grisham's portfolio of Mississippi personalities keeps the listener involved right up to the somewhat surprising conclusion. Enjoy.

Historia
March 19, 1945: The war in the Pacific approaches its apocalyptic climax. The largest wartime armada ever assembled, Task Force 58, is closing in on Okinawa; once taken, it will finally put American B-29 bombers in range of the home islands of Japan - and victory. Trial by Fire is the gripping novelization of how, against all odds, the sailors of the Franklin were able to save their ship, after three agonizing days of battling the flames that ultimately claimed the lives of 832 men and injured 300 more.

Once you start you'll hate when it ends
Revisado: 03-26-22
While it us an engrossing novel of WWII naval life and wartime battle I don't think it ends as well as it could. No matter, this intriguing look at an aircraft carrier at sea during WWII will give you the rarest look of that kind of life...in particular the ins and outs of the engineering protocols and the men responsible. Seen primarily thru the eyes of the USS Franklin's executive officer and his observations of shipboard life. When the Pacific Fleet enemy attacks and nearly sinks the ship ordinary men are seen as heros as they save the ship doing the things navymen are trained to do every day

I have listened to almost every Griffin book this is my least favorite. I think so highly of the author before I finished this work, I went back to another "Presidential Agent" book with a different narrator and read and enjoyed that.

A typically engrossing Ben Coes book
Revisado: 08-23-21
I could hardly put it down. let's face it if the "bad guys" are going to attack New York City you have to be interested. When the attack is a mis-direct of a mis-direct it is even more compelling. I do find it hard to overlook a reference to a "lieutenant colonel, U.S. Navy in charge of a Navy SEAL team" but it did not retract from the book's theme or outcome. By the way I've heard Ari Fliakos narrate other books but this one was Very Good.

Watch out drug runners, the Navy is on your track
Revisado: 05-04-21
There were times I couldn't put this recording down, other times I wanted to turn it back to Amazon. The story was a very interesting tale of illegal drug chasing. It was a strong story that was worth staying with. At the same time it high lighted the complex and dangerous day to day life of submarine sailors at sea. The narration put me to sleep. I have the next book in this series and have checked that it does not include the same reader.

one of best Navy oriented story around
Revisado: 04-06-21
I could not stop listening to this book. There are more twists and turns then waves in the ocean. The skipper of a Mayport, FL ASW destroyer is the central figure but he reaches out and touches various members of his chain of command and their associates. Like a kettle boiling the story builds and builds until the kettle bursts and the intricacies of this well-written sea yarn all come together in a way you could not predict. Right or wrong the story ends and the final outcome does leave some questions but the main character finishes in a satisfactory manner leaving some to wonder if there is a sequel.

While Congress debates the merits of continued funding for the stealth bomber, sinister forces have their own goals in mind. During a training exercise, a B-2 bomber disappears. When search efforts produce no evidence that the bomber crashed, the US Air Force has no choice but to acknowledge that one of its most secret and high-tech aircraft has been hijacked.
Recovery of the B-2 and its crew becomes the president's highest priority, and the Kremlin claims no knowledge of the missing aircraft. Finally, intelligence leads to what at first seems a very unlikely suspect: Cuba.

Revisado: 10-11-20
I can't say enough about this book. The mystery and intrigue of a 21st century event that could take place had me on the edge of my chair from start to finish. I was particularly impressed with the intricacies of the event and the technical cross-talk between American, Cuban and Russian agencies. With all these personalities, the reader did a marvelous job inserting new voices. I think most good books I encounter should be a movie...this one must be a movie.

It's 1949. When war veteran Aloysius Archer is released from Carderock Prison, he is sent to Poca City on parole with a short list of dos and a much longer list of don'ts: do report regularly to his parole officer, don't go to bars, certainly don't drink alcohol, do get a job - and don't ever associate with loose women. The small town quickly proves more complicated and dangerous than Archer's years serving in the war or his time in jail.
