Entertaining & Accurate Introduction to Norse Myth

Neil Gaiman sets out to retell the Norse myths in engaging, modern English while staying faithful to their original spirit. His goal is not only to entertain but to leave an impression—so strong, in fact, that readers might remember the stories and share them orally with friends and family. In this way, he aims to revive the oral tradition in which these myths were originally passed down. I have to say, the way he writes and tells these stories is truly entertaining.

This isn’t a direct paraphrasing of the Norse Eddas, but rather a curated introduction to the most iconic characters, stories, and themes. It serves as an accessible gateway into Norse mythology, offering a refreshing contrast to much of modern fantasy, which often follows a predictable, gamified arc: slay monsters, collect weapons, repeat. Gaiman’s retellings, by contrast, are full of clever tricks, riddles, unexpected turns, and moral ambiguity.

Readers familiar with Tolkien will notice clear parallels, yet a key difference stands out: in Norse mythology, the main antagonists are giants—not orcs or goblins. This shift makes the narrative echo biblical stories like the conquest of Canaan more than Tolkien’s world. Meanwhile, the gods’ frequent scheming and pettiness are reminiscent of the divine drama found in works like the Iliad and the Odyssey.

I highly recommend this book—not just for its entertainment value, but also for the cultural and literary insight it offers in such a short, engaging format.

There's a part where a group of Delta Operators are with some British Marines and the Brits are like "It's tea time!" and they break out a tea set on the side of this mountain beyond friendly lines it's wild.

As a story, the Silmarillion is an intense compilation of the entire history of Tolkien's world. It's a good listen if you're interested in the lore, it has some epic stories along the way.

As a performance, the reader is good. I prefer British readers for British authors, though. There's also a long song that plays over the end of each act which is cringey and distracts you from important details.

Overall, it definitely made me want to become a warrior fighting for a just cause. I think the book is too dense for an audio book, though, and I recommend getting a hard copy.

Doesn't hit the mark as a human story. It feels more like a history report that doesn't suit audio book.

However, I think it was that historical approach that made it thorough enough to tell the NVA side of plans and strategy. I appreciated that part.

Got a lot from this story. Weirdly, putting the speed on 1.5 made the performer's forced drawl less annoying. Zielke does have a douchy "then I partied with the cool kids and hot girls" part of each trip. Otherwise, it was some incredible stuff.

Gripping story that has completely changed my perspective on WWII. The author does repeat facts over and over again, as if each chapter was a separate article and didn't expect you to read the earlier ones. However, it is well worth the read.

The stories of the Jedburghs, and the SOF units that stem from them, also include lots of books that are more accessible after reading this one.
