Another Outstanding Book.

I liked everything about the way the author writes the fictional characters with historical realism. Love the Maizie Dobbs character. Her work, her struggles, her investigations, her family and friends. The london blitz attacks for such a long time. The descriptions that bring death, destruction, and war time sacrifices to life.
Highly recommend the entire series.

Historia
Maisie Dobbs got her start as a maid in an aristocratic London household when she was thirteen. Her employer, suffragette Lady Rowan Compton, soon became her patron, taking the remarkably bright youngster under her wing. Lady Rowan’s friend, Maurice Blanche, often retained as an investigator by the European elite, recognized Maisie’s intuitive gifts. The outbreak of war changed everything. Ten years after the Armistice, in the spring of 1929, Maisie sets out on her own as a private investigator, one who has learned that coincidences are meaningful, and truth elusive.

Outstanding new series
Revisado: 03-13-25
I'm a bit late in finding this series but I'm so glad I did. This story brings tears to my eyes at the realism of war-- for all the lives lost. How damaged the fighting men returned with such horrendous scars, ptsd (she'll shock back then) and the sacrifices by so many families of their loved ones. This story brings to life the struggles, heart aches, loss of life, fear, strength during the war. Main character is enchanting, relatable and enters the change of class structure because of war. Heart wrenching sad at the outcome of Maisie Dobbs and her first case that gives you the story of her becoming a wartime nurse and her love.
I honestly think this book brings an understanding to the stress, damage and trauma that the war caused for so many in Britain/France at the time. Narration was done really well. I thought this would be a good book to read as you study WWI.
I kept googling WWI facts, information, places, total fatalities, gas warfare outcomes and laws passed after the horrific damage to the human body. 'Yellow girls'- working in munitions...etc as I read this. Very well written.
The writer adds the realism with feelings of actually being in the wartime red cross tent as 1000's of injured men were brought in on stretchers for treatment in the red cross tent. The injuries, the types of wounds, the aftermath of trying to readjust to the real world post war.
Highly recommend this series. Historical fiction with a mystery of an investigation by Maisie Dobbs herself.
5 stars!!!! Just outstanding. A new favorite historical fiction mystery author and Series. Thank you.

Revisado: 02-28-25
It's a long recap of the new American lady finding out how the magical watch works. Very disappointed. I know it's from the keeper of the secret of time travel. But long and drawn out. Wished I would have saved a credit.
Hopefully someone else will enjoy it. Just my opinion.

Characters were likeable and the storyline was easy to follow. A US Marshal protecting a witness to a shooting. The shooter is high profiled and has a lot of people and resources to prevent her from testifying. His job is to keep her alive while trying to stay hidden long enough to get her to testify in court.
Narration was done really well.

depressing story about pedophiles in london
Revisado: 02-03-25
Have to say this is the 2nd series from Victoria Hamilton that I started. The first, the Lady Anne series is about a women who doesn't want to give up what little freedom she has as a women in this time in england and constantly questions if she will get married over and over in all 5 books while figuring out a mystery.
This book a different series is about a pedophile ring in london getting little girls from the poverty stricken children's homes and sells them to the rich men of london. The main character is someone who forms a women's club to save girls under guise of a mysterious woman savior. A murder happens to the gent who was about to abuse a child who this women saves. The search for answers takes you through out London's poor children's homes and seedy side.
To be honest the book is very depressing and the oppression of women's rights and options in life and of young poor homeless children is horrendous.
I found it quite depressing and not such a great read for entertainment. Although circumstances at this time frame in london is quite accurate it does not make for a good book to read as a mystery. The topics are tuff, horrendous, and just plain depressing for a book to read.
Hopefully others will enjoy it.
I really liked Deb Marlowe as a good historical mystery to read instead.

Great historical mystery.
Revisado: 01-30-25
I stumbled upon this author purely by accident. I was pleasantly riveted to this historical mystery taking place in London during the cholera epidemic and the building of the sewer system that would help sanitary conditions and provide clean water. Not only do we get a female doctor who studied in America and grandfathered in to work in Britain. We get the hostility and judgement faced by a women doctor doing post mordems and assisting the police in catching a killer.
The narration was done so well, that I felt like I was there with the characters as the story progressed.
The descriptions depicts London's poor living conditions, disease, and what happens when families die leaving behind children who end up in the work house. The living and working conditions of London's orphaned children is really horrendous. Characters were easy to to get to know and like. The writing style flowed easily as the story went along as it built up to the killer. I can truly say, I can't wait for the next book in this series. I hope the author writes this as a series of multiple books to come.
Well written, captivating and truly great historical mystery.

the voices have changed for the worst. Sean now sounds like a 3 pk a day smoker. It really throws off the listening experience for me.
Lucy sounds unsure of herself with this story. Not one of my favorite storylines in the series.

Revisado: 11-30-24
Absolutely loved this second book of this storyline. The characters come to life with the past bride stories being told to Sonya, the current blood relationship who inherits the house and all of its sad love stories. The start of the curse is revealed with the start of the first death.
Sonya, Trey, Owen, Cleo, 3 dogs and a cat make the house a home and learn it's secrets.
The writing is done so well I feel part of each character. The tale flows effortlessly. This second book is as good as the first.
The only downside is waiting for book three and four to be completed.
It will be worth the wait.

Not my favorite
Revisado: 11-16-24
Overall, 2 storylines going at the same time, with nothing new with this writing style.
The daughter of the Nicole, is brass, loud, obnoxious and scream yells alot. Found this character irritating. (My opinion).
Blessed returns with Sherlock and Savich. This storyline was drawn out.
The other one with Nicole and her loud, yelling daughter was too drawn out.
Have to say, this was one of my least favorite books from this author.
Long winded, overly loud and dramatic characters.
If you skipped this book as with some others in the series, you would not miss much.
Don't get me wrong, I like Catherine Coulter as an author, but this series really goes all over the place with storylines.
For example, you meet Sherlock and Savich in The Maze, and her mother is crazy, child like, and ridiculous. (Has she gotten on stable medications? Has Sherlock's father realized his wife is crazy?)
In the last couple of books in this FBI series, Sherlock's mother is a normal grandmother to their son Sean- before Sherlock's mother- (in The Maze) needed a companion to keep her safe. Now, she's a completely different character in the last couple of books. Makes no sense. (Its like the author never addressed Sherlocks crazy mother, and now she's the normal mother and grandmother taking care of Sean. It's likeSherlocks's mother is a totally different character from when she was first introduced into the series. ????
But overall, the last couple of books in this FBI series have been good, back on track and entertaining.
Just my opinion.
Maybe you will enjoy this book more than I did. I have been relistening to the entire FBI series and have noticed how some of the books are just ridiculous. I get creative freedom when writing, but keeping characters consistent to a storyline helps fluidity.
