Yet another perfect delight of the DFZ novels
Revisado: 10-04-23
Like every book set in the DFZ before it, this one does not fail to thrill! My only complaint is that it didn't last longer.

Historia
Neil Gaiman has long been inspired by ancient mythology in creating the fantastical realms of his fiction. Now he turns his attention back to the source, presenting a bravura rendition of the great northern tales. In Norse Mythology, Gaiman fashions primeval stories into a novelistic arc that begins with the genesis of the legendary nine worlds; delves into the exploits of the deities, dwarves, and giants; and culminates in Ragnarok, the twilight of the gods and the rebirth of a new time and people.

Gaiman's retelling of Norse mythology is spellbinding, and to hear the author himself read it is a real treat.

Historia
Our prisons and mental hospitals are filled with tragic stories like Tuesday Storm's. Her early childhood was riddled with torturous "games" and violent physical attacks. She was isolated from the rest of her family, locked in an attic with nothing but a bare bed and a bucket for a toilet, and fed just enough to be kept alive. The experts say it's next to impossible to find the soul's light in a dark past like Tuesday's.

a disappointing sequel
Revisado: 11-18-16
While the first book by this author is amazing, this sequel leaves a lot to be desired. Nothing interesting happens. There is no real action, which makes for a pretty boring plot.

Historia
A silent, simmering killer terrorized New England in 1911. A heat wave unlike any that had come before killed people in the streets, caused others to drown in the waters where they sought relief, and drove still others to suicide. As more than 2,000 people died during the natural disaster, another silent killer began her own murderous spree. Amy Archer-Gilligan operated the Archer Home for Elderly People and Chronic Invalids in Windsor, Connecticut.

Fascinating story--but unfortunately bad narrator
Revisado: 06-15-16
Looking at other reviews, you'll see that some people are bothered by the fact that this book actually covers two stories in one--the story of Amy Archer and her many murders, and that of the heat wave of 1911 which also killed many people. I personally enjoyed it, and thought both stories were intriguing. Telling both stories concurrently helped set the time period, and gave a very good overview of the area. In all, I really enjoyed this book.
Except for the narration. Eddie Frierson would be a wonderful narrator for a fiction novel or children's book, but for a serious work of non-fiction, I think he was a bad choice. I know that narrators doing 'voices' for characters is a pretty normal thing, but this book doesn't contain dialogue so much as it has quotations--usually from letters and newspaper articles. So doing voices for these seemed an odd choice, particularly since Eddie's voices are really bombastic and cartoony. Even so, I did manage to get use to them for a while, at least, until he did Amy Archer's voice.
Eddie Frierson can not do women's voices. And unfortunately he didn't let that fact stop him from trying. It grated on my nerves every time he did the annoying fake-granny voice for Amy Archer. And in case you missed it, Amy is the titular serial killer in this book, so there are a LOT of quotations from her.
This was the only thing about this book that I didn't like, but it was a pretty big part of the book, so make of that what you will.

Historia
This true story begins on a sunny morning in 2003, just before the Fourth of July, outside of Flint Michigan, when an 80-year-old grandmother has mysteriously disappeared from the face of the Earth. She was my mother. Three days after she disappeared, the charred remains of her new car were identified, after being completely destroyed by an intentional fire; but she was nowhere to be found.

Not an interesting read
Revisado: 04-13-16
I don't know if it's because of the inexperience of the author or what, but this has been one of the most boring true crime books I've listened to. Nothing about it was particularly interesting. Also, this book had a tendency to repeat itself. Like, not just reminding you of information it had already told you, but literally copy and pasting information with even the exact same phrasing as in previous chapters. It was annoying. And there is a chapter just stuck in the middle that just goes off on a tangent telling stories about random other family members which isn't relevant to anything. I didn't enjoy this book, in fact, I didn't even finish it. I got about 3/4 of the way through before I gave up.
The narration in this audiobook is good, but the story is poorly written, in my opinion.

Historia
On July 13, 2011, Laura Jean Ackerson of Kinston, North Carolina, went to pick up her two toddler sons. It would be the last time she was seen alive. Laura's ex, Grant Hayes - the father of her two sons - and his wife, Amanda, the mother of his newborn daughter, both pointed the finger at each other as the one guilty of murdering Laura, cutting up her body, and then transporting and disposing of the remains on the shores of Oyster Creek, Texas.

Interesting case with a loooong boring ending
Revisado: 04-03-16
This case is fascinating, and seems well researched. My problem was the second half of the book, which covers the trials of the two accused. That part exhaustively covers every minute detail of what every single person in the court room said. While some might find that interesting, I found it to be overly long and boring, and did skip a couple of the later chapters. This case is very interesting, but this book is not my favorite true crime book.

Weakest of this series
Revisado: 07-13-15
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Yes
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
I love the Hearlds of Valdemar series, and have really enjoyed this collegium series, but so far I think this book is the weakest of the lot. It was very different from the other books and the ending just felt weirdly abrupt and unsatisfactory to me.
What does Nick Podehl bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Nick is a great narrator. He does voices very well. There was one awkward part in this book, though, where the main character is in the middle of a conversation and suddenly has a series of flash backs to the previous books. Because it was in audio format and not text, the transition into these flashbacks was unclear and very confusing. I had to rewind and listen a second time before I understood what was happening.
Was Redoubt worth the listening time?
While redoubt is the weakest of the series, it's still very good and well worth a listen.
