Jack and Win get more than they bargained for on this Canadian adventure. The river is great and predictable. Their friendship grows closer as they discover a massive forest fire coming their way and realize they have to warn others who they encounter along the way. The river, the forest and it's denizen, and the fire, are no match for the evil of men. What lurks around this bend? A narrator who clearly and with expert cadence will keep you enthralled by each word of this great book. This is time well spent.

narration was superb! story, a work of fiction, superb and so good, you want it to be real. Rowing is a subject throughout this book and dare I mention that I read "The Boys in the Boat", and did not buy a rowing machine, but I did buy a erg(rower) while listening to this. was it subliminal? hmm, perhaps? no. I was looking for some kind of exercise and I love rowing! and I love this book! it's worth a credit! it's worth the price doubled without a credit! if you miss this book, man you have really missed out on the best fictional book of 2023.

If you’ve read the Iliad and the Odyssey or just excerpts for college perhaps? Then you know it can be a little confusing. This book however turns the confusing verses into a story that is mesmerizing and intense. It’s a tragedy written in ancient times by Homer depicting the lives of the Mediterranean peoples and the Gods they believed in, most noticeably the Greeks. I didn’t just read this, but listened to the Audible version as well, narrated by Natalie Haynes, the author. I highly recommend the Audible version for correct pronunciation of names and places, and too the author voices the story so well! This book has never had a rendition told from the female perspective which actually brings new life and understanding to verses that often confused and bewildered many. For instance, Clytemnestra’s hatred of her husband, Agamemnon for deceitfully arranging to have his daughter, Iphigenia sacrificed under the guise of marrying her to Achilles. Why? To appease the gods to grant the Greek army wind, as they left the shores of Greece bound to Troy to rescue Menelaus’s wife Helen, sister to Clytemnestra, from the Trojans, specifically Paris, the son of Priam, king of Troy. Clytemnestra wants her husband to die and because we have her viewpoint of the events leading up to and beyond, we understand not only the wrath of Clytemnestra but the situation as a whole. Then there’s poor Cassandra, the daughter of Priam and Hecabe, who has been blessed with seeing the future by Apollo and then cursed by the same so that no one will ever believe a word she says. Everyone believes she’s insane! And then there’s patient Penelope, the wife of Odysseus, waiting for her husband to return home from the war after the Greeks defeat the Trojans. She recounts the bard’s account of where her husband is and his adventures attempting to return home to Ithaca, (The Odyssey). The women are brutally honest and so flows the tale of tragedy, weaving a new understanding into your mind and memories. This is a tale you will want to forget, but after traveling through the pages with Natalie Haynes, you won’t soon do so.

Steve Earle does an awesome job of reminiscing about the early days of rock and roll with an emphasis on folk music. His guitar playing and singing are nicely done with a lot of charm and character. It’s easy sitting back and getting lost in his gravelly voice and at times he’s picking a tune while relating a story that makes you want to dance. This is a recording I can easily listen to many times. Beware though, the language is adult, but that’s just his honesty, which for me was a welcome experience.

I struggle to review this one because I personally know the author, Terry Roberts. He and I are former classmates from high school. And this book, wow, it was really good! Jedediah is just too real. It’s hard to believe he’s fictional. The story and fictional accounts are almost Homeric in scope and detail. My friend has created someone in Jedediah and his troupe that poetically pairs with Odysseus and his crew, traversing the rails over mountains and valleys, bringing spirits in Prohibition, and a gospel that opens purses and provides entertainment akin to a traveling circus. There are heroes and villains, the devil, death, and a dream of God as an old farmer carving life. Set during Prohibition in the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina where people were dirt poor, living hard with few roads traveling mostly by mule and wagon or walking, Solomon’s Crusade would have been a big event for mountain folk fervent in their religious beliefs. It’s not hard to imagine such a spectacle or the events written here. Throw in a crooked sheriff, the Ku Klux Klan, a flood, and a fire, and you got a story that’s fun to read. But it’s the characters and their story that turns the pages and eats into your heart until the last page. The narrator’s voice and inflections were perfect here. A really great match all the way around. I’m surprised there are no other reviews. You guys are missing out on some great storytelling!

Usually I have no trouble blabbing on about a book, how clever or interesting. But this book made me feel and experience emotion. It’s a great story with a lot of historical accounts of orphans being shipped across our country to hopefully better lives, but many facing indentured servitude and other horrible situations. The organization that runs the trains has altruistic intentions and follows up if there are problems but threaten the kids initially with a return to New York City, poverty, and no hope unless they behave themselves once taken (adopted, bought?). Alternatively we are told the story of Niamh, (pronounced Née-ov, as in oven, where mh in Gaelic is a v sound), whose name is changed to Dorothy, and then again later to Vivian after being adopted by Good parents, and Molly a modern day Gothic gal who is just looking for someone who will love her like a mom or dad. Molly is in trouble for stealing a book from the library, Jane Eyre, and is looking at community service. Vivian, now 92, needs help organizing her attic and through some manipulation by a boy sweet on Molly from high school manages to get that task for her community service. Molly and Vivian are a lot alike and then the story unfolds of Vivian as a young orphan while we get a glimpse of Molly a foster child. This story is told well and will surprise and inspire you, tugging at your heart. The narrator does a great Irish accent and tells this with gusto. I applaud her wonderful voice here as it truly added to the story. She reads a little too fast for me, but decreasing the speed to 0.9 helped tremendously. This is a jewel of a story made even better by Audible. I highly recommend it!

I listened mostly hiking the mountains where I live but found a desire to listen at other times. This was definitely one of the most enjoyable listens I’ve experienced using audiobooks (Audible in this case), often talking out loud and laughing suddenly. Griz goes after Jess their stolen dog without thinking. 10 years old, manning a sailboat, with the other dog, Jip, he chases a grown dishonest man and will encounter obstacles that would strike fear into the heart of any grownup. Once on the mainland they follow on foot and begin an amazing journey. The narrator was spot on and his voice was highly compelling. I can’t remember when I’ve enjoyed a book more than this one.

This is not another story about Navy Seals, rather another retelling. It’s original and fresh and narrated by the author and owner of this historical account. It’s like sitting down across from retired Admiral William H. McRaven in an intimate and relaxed setting, where he regales you about his experiences as a Navy Seal and a patriot. He’ll leave you breathless and in tears and make you chuckle and feel intense patriotism. This is time well spent. Afterwards, I felt like Bill McRaven, was my old friend that I could call anytime and chat with. The sense of inclusion is subtle and welcome here. Don’t hesitate, get this book and enjoy every minute!

I love this author and have read many of his books, this one included. Listening to it narrated by George Newbern was a great experience! He nails the voice in my head from reading it before. You know this is an autobiography of sorts about the author but with so much magic and wonder of childhood thrown in. A great story and read so well. Newbern will coddle you while weaving a master spell by McCammon. There are laugh out loud moments and tears will fall and you’ll shudder and be appalled and clap bravo at the end. This book whether you read it or listen, is time well spent!
