Historia
Miranda’s parents live in a dilapidated house in rural France that they share with two llamas, eight ducks, five chickens, two cats, and a freezer full of food dating back to 1983. This wry, propulsive story about a singularly eccentric family and the sibling rivalry, generational divides, and long-buried secrets that shape them, is a glorious debut novel from a seasoned playwright with immense empathy and a flair for dialogue.

Historia
Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. At the turn of the century, a twelve-year-old girl from Kerala’s long-existing Christian community, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time.

Robust Indian Family Saga
Revisado: 05-27-24
The various interwoven stories and characters within this saga are compelling, detailed and rich. I cared about all the characters and learned so much about rural life in Kerala. The passages that describe medical procedures were fascinating. I also enjoyed the humor sprinkled artfully throughout the novel.

Captivating boarding school mystery with annoying teen girls
Revisado: 04-14-24
The various possibilities of culprits and the interaction between the detectives kept this mystery engaging but the chapters following the teen students felt long and tedious.

Historia
Among the most celebrated and beloved novels of 2021, Anthony Doerr’s gorgeous third novel is a triumph of imagination and compassion, a soaring story about children on the cusp of adulthood in worlds in peril, who find resilience, hope—and a book. In Cloud Cuckoo Land, Doerr has created a magnificent tapestry of times and places that reflects our vast interconnectedness—with other species, with each other, with those who lived before us, and with those who will be here after we’re gone.

Historia
One year after the death of his beloved musician father, thirteen-year-old Benny Oh begins to hear voices. The voices belong to the things in his house—a sneaker, a broken Christmas ornament, a piece of wilted lettuce. Although Benny doesn't understand what these things are saying, he can sense their emotional tone; some are pleasant, a gentle hum or coo, but others are snide, angry and full of pain. When his mother, Annabelle, develops a hoarding problem, the voices grow more clamorous.

A kind insight into mental illness
Revisado: 11-22-23
Well-crafted story. The portrayal of mental illness is romanticized somewhat, but it’s refreshing to see it shown in a more positive light.
The actor was great with the male voices, but the cloying voice used for the mother’s character was irritating and condescending.

Historia
Between his work on the 2014 Audible Audiobook of the Year, Hamlet, Prince of Denmark: A Novel, and his performance of Classic Love Poems, narrator Richard Armitage ( The Hobbit, Hannibal) has quickly become a listener favorite. Now, in this defining performance of Charles Dickens' classic David Copperfield, Armitage lends his unique voice and interpretation, truly inhabiting each character and bringing real energy to the life of one of Dickens' most famous characters.

The prize-winning and best-selling author of Say Nothing presents a grand, devastating portrait of three generations of the Sackler family, famed for their philanthropy, whose fortune was built by Valium and whose reputation was destroyed by OxyContin. Empire of Pain is a masterpiece of narrative reporting and writing, exhaustively documented and ferociously compelling.

Patrick Radden Keef turns this complex story about the Sackler’s and the genesis of
OxyContin and opioid epidemic into a page-turner. I listened for hours at a time while walking, driving or doing house work. Truly a masterpiece of narrative nonfiction.

Incredible , true, story
Revisado: 04-07-19
I learned about this book through the podcast “Longform” and I’m so glad I looked into it. This is an amazing story about a brilliant criminal and his international enterprises. I would often listen to it while in bed, trying to get to sleep which I often couldn’t do because of the dramatic twists and turns of the narrative.
My only complaint is that the narrator sometimes spoke too quickly. I frequently had to repeat segments. But perhaps I was distracted (or more sleepy than I realized).
