Deeply researched and documented biography
Revisado: 04-06-25
The author made snide and catty remarks throughout, not only about Paul, but everyone in his orbit. Unncessary, and off putting. there are better ways to sjow objectivity. Also an outsized focus on John Lennon for a bio about Paul, regardless of the significance of John in Paul's life. The author also seems to have a penchant for not letting facts get in the way of a good story, such a claiming that Paul didnt attend the Bangladesh concert because he was afraid to run into John...when the fact is that Paul and George were barely speaking at that time. Still a compelling book and very interesting take on the life of Paul McCartney. As a huge Beatle fan I couldn't turn away!

Historia
The history of women in medieval Wales before the English conquest of 1282 is one largely shrouded in mystery. This misfortune touches even the most well-known royal woman of the time, Joan of England, the wife of Llywelyn the Great of Gwynedd. This first-ever account of Siwan, as she was known to the Welsh, interweaves the details of her life and relationships with a gendered re-assessment of Anglo-Welsh politics by highlighting her involvement in affairs, discussing events in which she may well have been involved but have gone unrecorded and her deployment of royal female agency.

Detailed history of Siwan!
Revisado: 03-04-25
I loved the detailed story of Joan and her contemporaries, especially how women played an important role in the politics and events of the times. I was not so fond of the repetition of facts and themes...I feel it could have been much more concise/shorter and not lost any substantive info. The constant changing of Welsh pronunciation was also distracting, but I give the narrator points for attempting the difficult pronunciation. But she did not sound like a Welsh speaker...my apologies if she is!

loved the book, but the Nirvana concert didn't actually happen?
Revisado: 01-03-25
I loved the lyrical descriptions of Bray and all the emotions of 16 and 17 year olds...taking me WAY back to my own teenage years. Music was as important to me as it was to Maggie (still is) and the transformative nature of it was depicted perfectly. My only complaint is that the Nivana show described didn't actually happen, Nirvana didn't play a live show in Rome, they played in Milan. A minor point, but it did jar a bit. Loved it all anyway.

Not enough of a wrap of the story of Langoreth and Lailoken
Revisado: 12-30-24
I was disappointed in this last volume. The prose is beautiful as always but the addition of new characters and focus on them did nothing for the thru line of the plot. The end of the book also did not fully wrap up the story. I was often lost trying to figure out how the separate narratives related to each other and in many cases I felt the stories did not mesh. Some of the narrators also pronounced names differently, which added to the confusion. I wish Toni Frutin could have read it all! She is amazing. All in all, I loved the 1st book so much, the second was good, but not as good and as a final book in a three part series, I felt this book was often entertaining but did not fully succeed.

Somewhat frustrating sequel to the Forgitten Queen
Revisado: 12-16-24
So glad to have Toni Fruitin back as the 'voice' of the forgotten queen, but the other two narrators were not as gifted. The voice of Angharad sounded Irish, which seemed wrong and she and the voice of Lail pronounced the same names differently which led to confusion. Too much time spent on the battle and it's immediate aftermath, which slowed the story. I so loved the first book and am hoping this slightly less entertaining middle book will lead to a brilliant third book. Very much looking forward to reading the third book.

Mediocre updating of Austen's Emma
Revisado: 04-11-24
I was disappointed by this retelling of Emma; a book that challenges you with its heroine at times as she is rather self centered and conceited. In Austen's world, I found redemption for Emma, no such redemption here. One fun thing was identifying the various characters and matching them to the original. Also liked the description of island food treats. Otherwise, I could have given this a miss.

Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from that shed.
