Historia
Danny North is the first Gate Mage to be born on Earth in nearly 2,000 years, or at least the first to survive and claim his power, for families of Westil in exile on Earth have a treaty that requires the death of any suspected Gate Mage. The wars between the families had been terrible until at last they realized it was their own survival in question. But a Gate Mage, one who could build a Great Gate back to Westil, would give his own family a terrible advantage over all the others and reignite the wars. So it was decided that they all had to die.

The final chapter, 'Afterward', the best part.
Revisado: 01-07-16
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Probably not. Too many characters, and a book series that changed direction.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
Dare I say, the best part of all three books was the final chapter called the 'Afterward'. It is a 10 mins narration, read by the author Orson Scott Card. He talks about his thought processes and explains 'why' the books have taken different directions. I was fascinated to learn the idea of Mithermages started in 1997, and took another 34 years before the first book was written.I will describe this third book as 'different', moving into spirtual ideologies, perhaps looking at good verses evil. Several threads or sub-plots, started in the first two books go in different directions. Was this a good read or listen ? I don't know. It was the 'Afterward' chapters that made listening worthwhile.
What aspect of Emily Rankin and Stefan Rudnicki ’s performance would you have changed?
Good. The characters could be identified by the voices each reader choose.
Did Gatefather inspire you to do anything?
No.
Any additional comments?
I have now learnt that a massive amount of time and effort goes into writing a book. I feel guilty for criticizing.

Historia
Danny North knew from early childhood that his family was different - and that he was different from them. While his cousins were learning how to create the things that commoners called fairies, ghosts, golems, trolls, werewolves, and other such miracles that were the heritage of the North family, Danny worried that he would never show a talent, never form an "outself"....

Disappointing, complex, confusing
Revisado: 11-27-15
What would have made The Lost Gate better?
Get rid of 70% of the characters and 95% of the terminology
What could Orson Scott Card have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Get to the point sooner. Too many unimportant details.
What didn’t you like about Stefan Rudnicki and Emily Janice Card ’s performance?
Voices need to be sharper and easier to hear. I blame the sound engineer.
What character would you cut from The Lost Gate?
At least 70% of them.
Any additional comments?
Disappointing. The author 'Orson Scott Card' has introduced too many characters, many of whom have no bearing on the story and only appear briefly. I suppose the book is about individuals with supernatural abilities and how they interact with humans. Confusing ! Why did the author have to list dozens and dozens of the skill sets with fancy titles, explain how they work, and then never introduce a character with these skills.
I have often thought it would be a good idea to have two narrators for audio books. Man and woman for the male and female voice parts. But, no, not in this case. 'Stefan Rudunski' reads one chapter of the book and 'Emily Janice Card' reads the next chapter and/or each narrator is solely responsible for one thread of the book.
'Stefan Rudunski' has a beautiful strong booming voice ; perfect for theatre and stage. But, his voice as narrator was hard to follow. It sounded like he was in an echo chamber and the words all merged to together. I blame the producer/director and the sound engineer.
I am now 30% into the book and have decided to give up. I have wasted enough time. There are two more books in the series, so perhaps these is something I am missing. One day, I might come back and try listening again.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
This is the second book in the 'Will Robie' series. I gave up on the first book after just 30 mins. I flicked thru a couple of minutes of this book. The same boring scary monotones of 'Ron McLarty'.Other book reviewers suggest that this is a great read from David Buldacci. It is the narrator that brings a book to life, and 'value adds' to the experience. Ron McLarty does NOT have this skill.P.S. I absolutely hate "Sound Effects". Save that stuff for the movies and the big screen.

Monotonous monotone by narrator Ron McLarty

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
The audio book started with "Sound Effects", something I absolutely hate. It is an insult to the narrator, showing his/her voice will not carry the story.I have looked at other reviews of this book. The story line should interest me. But, I gave up after listening to Ron McLarty's voice for 30 mins.I want a refund for my wasted time and money.
What do you think your next listen will be?
Nothing read by Ron McLarty. Nothing from Macmillan Audio Books
What didn’t you like about Ron McLarty and Orlagh Cassidy ’s performance?
Ron McLarty's voice is better suited to the 30 seconds of scary advertisment to the next big horror movie block buster. Ron also sounds like he is a 3 packet per day smoker.Orlagh Cassidy. Only heard her voice for a few seconds. No opinions.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Innocent: Will Robie, Book 1?
Only got 5% into the audiobook, before I gave up. Cut the narrators, and start again.
Any additional comments?
I have also purchased the next book in the series "The Hit". It will not be listened to either. I am now even more annoyed at spending money on thse two audio books.
