Historia
Four years before Nina Totenberg was hired at NPR, where she cemented her legacy as a prizewinning reporter, and nearly twenty-two years before Ruth Bader Ginsburg was appointed to the Supreme Court, Nina called Ruth. A reporter for The National Observer, Nina was curious about Ruth’s legal brief, asking the Supreme Court to do something revolutionary: declare a law that discriminated “on the basis of sex” to be unconstitutional. That call launched a remarkable, nearly fifty-year friendship.

Title should be The Book of Nina
Revisado: 07-15-23
Don’t fall for the misleading title. This is Totenberg’s autobiography and she is just using her famous friend’s name to sell books. There is nothing in here about RBG that was not already known by even the most casual SCOTUS observer. I give her credit though for narrating her own book.

Another 3 star effort from Biskupic
Revisado: 04-16-23
As a lawyer who watches the Court closely more out of personal interest than work, I read most of Biskupic’s work. This one keeps up a consistent streak of meh. There is almost nothing in here that you don’t already know if you watch the court at all. She provides excessive background and does not make good choices about anecdotes worth delving deeply into. She often veers off into stories from the Justices backgrounds that just aren’t interesting. While the media holds her out as more of an objective “just the facts” reporter, she is not. Her bias to the left is a notch or two above subtle. Having said all this, it’s definitely a worthwhile read for a non lawyer unfamiliar with the Court. She gets the facts mostly right and her writing style is clear and accessible. You can definitely learn a lot from this book too if you know nothing about the modern Court. If someone asked me for one book to get a good feel for the Roberts Court, this would be it.

Historia
“Mine” is one of the first words babies learn, and by the time we grow up, the idea of ownership seems natural, whether we are buying a cup of coffee or a house. But who controls the space behind your airplane seat: you, reclining, or the squished laptop user behind you? Why is plagiarism wrong, but it’s okay to knock off a recipe or a dress design? And after a snowstorm, why does a chair in the street hold your parking space in Chicago, while in New York you lose both the space and the chair?

Accessible overview of property law

Great read for non-lawyers looking for a quick and dirty overview of how property law works in the US and historical background explaining why. The authors manage to cover a lot of ground without getting bogged down in the weeds of anything in particular.

Historia
In September 2010, at the beginning of the academic year at Sarah Lawrence College, a sophomore named Talia Ray asked her roommates if her father could stay with them for a while. No one objected. Her father, Larry Ray, was just released from prison, having spent three years behind bars after a conviction during a bitter custody dispute.

Sad story well told
Revisado: 03-07-23
Outstanding work by a clearly talented young man. Can’t imagine how hard it was for him to relive his trauma and share it with all of us so eloquently. Hearing how it happened left me worried for the vulnerable others out there who could fall into something like this.

Historia
In The Debt Trap, Josh Mitchell tells the untold story of the scandals, scams, predatory actors, and government malpractice that have created the behemoth that one of its original architects called a “monster.” As he charts the seventy-year history of student debt in America, Mitchell never loses sight of the countless student victims ensnared by an exploitative system that depends on their debt. Mitchell also draws alarming parallels to the housing crisis in the late 2000s, showing the catastrophic consequences student debt has had on families and the nation’s future.

Not a bad read….
Revisado: 02-14-23
Interesting back story of how the modern student loans came to be but I didn’t learn as much as I expected. And frankly would have liked to learn more about the back room dealing and less about the mundane anecdotes the author spends excessive time on. Expected to learn about how the student loan industry benefited from LIBOR manipulation but it’s not even mentioned. Author also leaves out any mention of the heavy hand Joe Biden played in creating the mess. Still a worthwhile read if you have a particular interest in the subject. If not, skip it.

Historia
HBO changed how stories could be told on TV. The Sopranos, Sex and the City, The Wire, Game of Thrones. The network’s meteoric rise heralded the second golden age of television with serialized shows that examined and reflected American anxieties, fears, and secret passions through complicated characters who were flawed and often unlikable.

Well researched and interesting
Revisado: 02-12-23
Pick this one up when you go on your next long drive as it’s hard to put down. Well sourced and interesting behind the scenes insight into the ups and downs of HBO from its beginnings to present day. Would be straight fives if authors read it themselves. Narrator’s lack of familiarity with certain names and events was noticeable but not too distracting.

Historia
There may be no tidy solutions or pithy answers to life’s big challenges, but Michelle Obama believes that we can all locate and lean on a set of tools to help us better navigate change and remain steady within flux. In The Light We Carry, she opens a frank and honest dialogue with listeners, considering the questions many of us wrestle with: How do we build enduring and honest relationships? How can we discover strength and community inside our differences? What tools do we use to address feelings of self-doubt or helplessness? What do we do when it all starts to feel like too much?

cutting room floor scraps from last book
Revisado: 01-13-23
I enjoyed Mrs Obama’s first book and was looking forward to this one. Huge let down. It seems to repeat itself and much of what was in the first book. Overall it struck me as a hodgepodge of random scraps from the cutting room floor of the first book.

Historia
I Did It is the story of Gina Champion-Cain, the mastermind behind the largest woman-led Ponzi scheme in US history—$400 million. This real-life story includes a multitude of participants, banks, hedge funds, egomaniacs, and small-time crooks, all fueled by greed, stupidity, and a keen desire to look the other way. And even when they were looking in the right direction, all of these people and entities saw nothing.

Interesting story
Revisado: 01-13-23
Worthwhile listen especially for those of us who spent time in San Diego and love the place! Even if you know the story, it was still interesting to hear what was going through Champion-Cain’s head as her scheme was unfolding. She comes across as transparent and contrite. The narration quality isn’t great. There is some repeating, background noise and disjointed diction but it doesn’t ruin the experience.
