They're about to learn, the hard way, that this is one sorcerer who always has a trick up his sleeve. Nobody has ever escaped from the Iceberg. But the Iceberg has never had a prisoner like Daniel Faust.

My favourite in the series so far
Revisado: 08-31-24
I originally started listening to the series with the mind of it being "we have Dresden at home". However over time it has found its niche in the form of a very gritty urban crime fantasy. The infrequent use of magic is more ritualistic, nasty, and costly. I don't normally like prison stories either but this worked.

In this dark and gritty collection - featuring short stories from Jim Butcher, Seanan McGuire, Kevin J. Anderson, and Rob Thurman - nothing is as simple as black and white, light and dark, good and evil.... Unfortunately, that's exactly what makes it so easy to cross the line.

A variety of stories of varied quality
Revisado: 01-22-24
The Dresden Files story was excellent. The other stories ranges from adequate to very good as did the narration. Sometimes the two aligned sometimes they didn't.

The man known as Cheradenine Zakalwe was one of Special Circumstances' foremost agents, changing the destiny of planets to suit the Culture through intrigue, dirty tricks or military action. The woman known as Diziet Sma had plucked him from obscurity and pushed him towards his present eminence, but despite all their dealings she did not know him as well as she thought. The drone known as Skaffen-Amtiskaw knew both of these people.

Thematically and structurally complex

This is one of the more demanding Culture novels with a bit more of Ian Banks and a bit less of Ian M Banks despite setting. Non-linear story telling at its finest.

Historia
Nancy Kranich (played by Emmy-nominated actress Natasha Lyonne of Russian Doll and Orange Is the New Black) is a night nurse on an orbiting space station. But Nancy hates her job, is sick of space, and longs to find adventure and a safe place to smoke cigarettes that won’t blow everyone up. But when Nancy gets caught up in an outer-space conspiracy involving President Kennedy, former vice-president Richard Nixon, and an intergalactic object that could change the course of history, she gets way more adventure than she bargained for.

Better by every metric than I expected
Revisado: 08-23-22
It's important to note that this is effectively a radio play and not an audio book. I was more used to the standard audio book experience so it took me a moment to adjust but once I did I loved it.
It was funnier, better cast, and better written than I had hoped for. The sound production values are out of this world, by far the best of any "audio book" I have encountered so far. There is a fair amount of fourth wall breaking but it makes sense in context and even the narration has its own tie in to the plot. Pay attention to when characters start to break the fourth wall who didn't previously, it has a consistent logic to it as far as I could tell. The story managed to surprise me.

Historia
Doctor Silas Coade wakes from disturbing dreams, on the steamship Demeter, in pursuit of an extraordinary find almost too incredible and too strange to believe, secreted within a lagoon in the icy inlets of Patagonia. But as they come in sight of their prize, he and the crew see they are not the first to come so far: there is a wreck ahead, and whatever ruined it may threaten them as well. Shaking off his nightmares, Doctor Silas Coade joins his fellow exploders on the deck of the Demeter and realises something has already gone dangerously wrong with their mission.

A strange tale
Revisado: 07-04-22
At its heart it is still Science Fiction but with hints of Cosmic Horror. To me occupies a similar space to Century Rain and Terminal World in its blurring of genre boundaries. If you are looking for more Revelation Space this isn't it but I strongly urge you to experience it.

Historia
Max Tegmark leads us on an astonishing journey through past, present and future, and through the physics, astronomy, and mathematics that are the foundation of his work, most particularly his hypothesis that our physical reality is a mathematical structure and his theory of the ultimate multiverse. In a dazzling combination of both popular and groundbreaking science, he not only helps us grasp his often mind-boggling theories, but he also shares with us some of the often surprising triumphs and disappointments that have shaped his life as a scientist.

Informative Mathematical Realism Apologism
Revisado: 10-14-21
As a mathematical realist I really loved this book and appreciate his four level ontological mapping of the multiverse. I am not sure that someone going in as a non mathematical realist will be converted by the end of the book (in much the same way as religious apologetics does not win many converts to their respective world-views).
I was surprised when he discussed his leanings towards mathematical finitism later on as many of his previous points seemed to depend on infinities such as in his explanation of the wavefunction and Hilbert space. I may have misunderstood. I disagreed with the outcome of his assessment on the likelihood of non-human life but can appreciate the reasoning involved.
The earlier sections on his personal experience with cosmology and physics are interspersed with enjoyable personal
vignettes and the bulk of the book can be enjoyed regardless of your position on mathematical realism.
I read this book after having read Life 3.0 and in general probably preferred the latter but both are well worthwhile.

One of the best Dark Fantasy stories I have heard
Revisado: 02-01-20
An amazing story that combines aspects of Greek / Judeocrhistian / Egyptian mythologies. Excellent narration brings it to "life:". I will probably still buy a physical copy of the book for the beautiful illustrations which accompany it.

Zachary Quinto - best known for his role as the Nimoy-approved Spock in the recent Star Trek reboot and the menacing, power-stealing serial killer, Sylar, in Heroes - brings his well-earned sci-fi credentials and simmering intensity to this audio-exclusive novella from master storyteller John Scalzi. One day, not long from now, it becomes almost impossible to murder anyone - 999 times out of a thousand, anyone who is intentionally killed comes back. How? We don't know.

The truth is still out there. The iconic hit that had millions searching for UFOs back in the 90s is now an exhilarating audio event, only from Audible. David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson reunite as FBI Special Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, joining an ensemble of original cast members in an out-of-this-world production.

This is not an audiobook
Revisado: 10-29-18
Its very important to note that this is effectively a radio play and not an audio book. There is almost no third person narration which means that exposition and scene setting often takes place by characters verbalising their thoughts and actions in a somewhat clumsy way. The quality of the voice acting and production values are superb. I received this for free through Audible's monthly giveaways and at that price point it was very good value.
