Not "read by the author"
Revisado: 03-23-09
Although the book is very good, it's not "read by the author" as indicated on the cover. Otherwise, it's Ann's normal witty entertaining style that makes this a keeper.

Absolutely fantastic!
Revisado: 07-27-04
I was in grade school during the 60s and declared to my first grade teacher that I was going to be an astronaut. Although I came close (two NASA interviews) I was not hired. Listening to this book brought me back to my childhood and the heyday of the United States space program. More than just narrative, the actual audio puts you inside the space program with NASA managers and the astronauts. I haven't been this excited since Deke Slayton's and Alan Shepard's book Moon Shot was made into a movie.

Historia
In The Progress Paradox, Gregg Easterbrook draws upon three decades of wide-ranging research and thinking to make the persuasive assertion that almost all aspects of Western life have vastly improved in the past century—and yet today, most men and women feel less happy than in previous generations. Why this is so and what we should do about it is the subject of this book.

Quickly turned left into liberal waters
Revisado: 06-15-04
I cannot recommend this book. I was expecting objective analysis but was myself subjected to an agenda driven piece favoring big-government, liberal solutions to all of humanity's problems. Read the reviews of the unabridged book before buying this one.

Quickly turned into a liberal political rant
Revisado: 06-15-04
As the others have said, the first part of the book seemed objective and OK, presenting reasons and data to support the author's point that humans on Earth have it better today than ever before. But rather quickly after that, he veered to the left and began to rant about the benefits of an idealistic society, based on left-wing, political ideas. He wants the United States to "buy" the world out of poverty, is anti-military, anti-business, and pro-big government. Overall I would not recommend this book. I was expecting an objective treatise, but was very disappointed.
