Mr. Ike's Sticky Notes Are Magic

While I skipped Mr. Ike's middle grade books, I couldn't resist his compliation for adults. As I anticipated, his notes deliver charming anecdotes from everyday life with middle school kids, and a bit of a lesson with most of his recollections.

Teachers like Mr. Ike are everywhere. They wear their superhero capes under their clothes or hide their halos in their hair. What a joy to hear from a teacher about some of the mundane, yet profound lessons his students teach him.

I enjoyed imagining all of the women characters in their tweed jackets with shoulder pads. Unfortunately that's where my enjoyment ended. Although the plot was far-fetched, it could have been saved with better writing. Several of the characters had the potential to be heroic or tragic, but never quite got there because the novel was too short to take on the ambitious goals it set out to achieve.

I bought this book based on my enjoyment of King George on Australian Survivor, not expecting much. We can look at other books written by US Survivor alums for proof that writing is not a skill necessary for life on the island.

What a delightful surprise this book is! Well written, thoughtful, personal, coherent and enjoyable. George is a very good writer. Although I wouldn't necessarily recommend this book to someone uninitiated in the Survivor world, fans of George and the Survivor franchise will find it an excellent way to spend a few hours.

Julia Whelan has written another utterly enjoyable novel and her performance as narrator is amazing.

It is fun to read a novel where the author uses every romance novel trope she can weave into the story without it falling apart. her author's note at the end illuminates her thought process and it's very interesting.

Congratulations on a successful Sophomore novel! I'm looking forward to more.

This is a typical romance novel with all of the expected tropes and the HEA. The narrator was not particularly adept, but was serviceable. A fine choice as a book included with Audible membership.

The lead protagonist is the most unlikable "heroine" I believe I've ever read. She brings shame to her gender by embodying almost every unlikable quality a self-centered, unaware, entitled, oafish narcissist can display, and we're supposed to believe it is done for comedic effect. It doesn't work.

Saskia Maarleveld is the only good thing about this project.

I can't say anything that hasn't already been said about Danielle MacDonald's performance except that I'm glad she has been limited to a single title on Audible. Regardless of her professional pedigree, this work is awful. At least the novel is good.

While it is true that our heroine is an excellent cook, explaining every recipe and method of meal preparation she uses gets old. Another of the main characters is a lawyer, but we don't have to slog through his caseload.

The narration is good, with the exception of a few mispronunciations of Philadelphia place names. The narrator gets out of the way of the story by being unobtrusive, but she adds nothing to the overall experience the way a truly great narrator can.

The story of sexual abuse is important and timely. Some of the characters' behaviors could be considered unexpected or exaggerated, but it's hard to know how different people may react in the same situation. Overall, the subject is thought provoking while the novel is still enjoyable.

Many times I'm disappointed in quick fiction because the editing is subpar and the narrators mispronounce so many words it becomes distracting. This little gem bucks the trends I often see in Only From Audible titles. While the novel falls short of a masterpiece, it is very enjoyable and provokes some thought. In short: a perfect pandemic read. It doesn't require too much mental energy and the quality is perfectly acceptable.

Andi Arndt Made Me Cry!

I've listened to dozens of books narrated by Andi Arndt and have always enjoyed her work (especially the Pancake Song). This book was different. Andi has kicked it up several notches and portrayed the heroine's grief with such poignancy it brought me to tears - twice. Her performance on this novel is stellar; her best work ever. Thank you, Andi!

Of course Andi's performance would be unremarkable if the story itself were not worthy, but the stars aligned and the reader is the winner. Corinne Michaels' story of a widow and her infant is both sad and ultimately uplifting. I would recommend this book to any lover of women's fiction.
