Historia
Opal has almost done it all—fought monsters, protected people from pillagers, and even defeated the legendary Ender Dragon! But that’s all in the past. Now, Opal has hung up her adventuring hat and is living the life of a happy creafter, far more likely to build a bed than to fight a Wither. In fact, Opal has decided that her time is best spent building her dream manor outside the very village that displays the Ender Dragon skull she brought back from the End! Meanwhile, Opal’s sister, Lisa, is only at the beginning of her journey.

Nice exploration on trauma
Revisado: 01-19-25
Generally a good book. I wish they wouldn’t say “sucks” so much, as I try to avoid that word for my kid. I appreciated they explored trauma themes. Might be challenging how Opal was able to overcome it by just going through the same thing that traumatized her in the beginning, but having support from her sister and Braun, sure, it could help. I appreciate trauma being more normalized, recognizing how behaviors can be in response it.

Sad about gender tropes
Revisado: 06-16-24
Why the gender stereotypes? Frustrating. And the terrible typical ‘kids disobey and things turn out awesome’ message that fewer kids need. Only gave stars because kiddo and I like cats and the nether.

Nice story about the changing nature of friendship
Revisado: 06-15-24
My son and I enjoyed this book. I appreciate the characters had real lives outside the game. Though it seemed like they had little else going on after school. It covered how friendships can shift over time, which was nice. Cranky was a favorite. And we liked how it followed real Minecraft play style. A couple words I wish my kid wasn’t exposed to. But generally we enjoyed it.

What a great story, lessons, and adventure
Revisado: 05-01-24
This is one of my favorite Minecraft books. Lessons in trusting who you are, kindness, boundaries, making up… so good for kids, and adults alike (overworked parents’ effort to connect overlooked = heart strings twanged). Wish they hadn’t used the word“sucks”, as I’m trying to not have my kid pick that up. But I hope he picks up the lessons in kindness and being genuine.

Engaging story, addresses the danger of lying
Revisado: 04-25-24
I appreciate that this book explored risks with lying, though it could have built in more impact and lesson for that. The dragon was a fun evolution throughout the book. There are situations detailed that aren’t possible in actual Minecraft, but that doesn’t really detract from the story. My son and I enjoyed it.

Welcome sequel
Revisado: 04-21-24
Max Brooks does a great job weaving story with life lessons. Fressons within this book were sage advice for anyone. My son and I really enjoyed this telling. I also appreciate that Max pulls threads of the other books, which the previous Minecraft stories have not done. Looking forward to the next book!

Historia
When a young man is ripped from his quiet life and stranded far from home, he must learn not only how to survive, but how to live. Stax Stonecutter has lived a peaceful—if unremarkable—life in his small town in the Overworld. The son of great adventurers and wise builders, Stax prefers an easier life. He loves to tend to his gardens and play with his cats all day, rather than venturing out to explore the surrounding lands. It's quiet on his estate, even lonely sometimes, but it suits Stax well enough.

Historia
Bianca has never been good at following the plan. She's more of an act-now, deal-with-the-consequences-later kind of person. But consequences can't be put off forever, as Bianca learns when she and her best friend, Lonnie, are in a terrible car crash. Waking up in the hospital, almost paralyzed by her injuries, Bianca is faced with questions she's not equipped to answer. She chooses instead to try a new virtual-reality version of Minecraft that responds to her every wish, giving her control over a world at the very moment she thought she'd lost it.

Trigger warning advised
Revisado: 04-07-24
The beginning of this book could be very triggering for anyone involved in or who has lost someone to a car crash. I wish I had been more prepared. Having lost several friends to cat accidents, including as a teen, this book felt intense for me the whole way through. I appreciate its effort in facing trauma, but if that was going to be the slant it could have included more healing efforts rather than just facing the truth. I guess that’s a good first step. My kiddo liked the Minecraft aspects, while I was the one grappling with emotions throughout it.

Good option to encourage involvement of dads
Revisado: 03-23-24
This book does a good job explaining why dads have a powerful role in the emotional development of kids. As a DV survivor single mother, I felt a lot of self judgement for the shortcomings of my singular influence on my son’s life. Considering the number of kids being raised by single moms, which is noted in this book, it would have been appreciated if there had been more guidance for helping children that simply won’t have a healthy male role model to help them develop emotional resilience. I came away feeling like my son is doomed rather than having actionable steps to still help him develop into an emotionally strong and happy individual. I know that wasn’t the intention of the book, but the way it came across felt disempowering for single moms.
