Nice exploration on trauma

Generally a good book. I wish they wouldn’t say “sucks” so much, as I try to avoid that word for my kid. I appreciated they explored trauma themes. Might be challenging how Opal was able to overcome it by just going through the same thing that traumatized her in the beginning, but having support from her sister and Braun, sure, it could help. I appreciate trauma being more normalized, recognizing how behaviors can be in response it.

Why the gender stereotypes? Frustrating. And the terrible typical ‘kids disobey and things turn out awesome’ message that fewer kids need. Only gave stars because kiddo and I like cats and the nether.

My son and I enjoyed this book. I appreciate the characters had real lives outside the game. Though it seemed like they had little else going on after school. It covered how friendships can shift over time, which was nice. Cranky was a favorite. And we liked how it followed real Minecraft play style. A couple words I wish my kid wasn’t exposed to. But generally we enjoyed it.

Realistic Minecraft engagement with inspiring morals that will stick with you beyond the book. Characters that really build their way into your heart. Worthwhile adventure of friends.

This is one of my favorite Minecraft books. Lessons in trusting who you are, kindness, boundaries, making up… so good for kids, and adults alike (overworked parents’ effort to connect overlooked = heart strings twanged). Wish they hadn’t used the word“sucks”, as I’m trying to not have my kid pick that up. But I hope he picks up the lessons in kindness and being genuine.

Engaging story, addresses the danger of lying

I appreciate that this book explored risks with lying, though it could have built in more impact and lesson for that. The dragon was a fun evolution throughout the book. There are situations detailed that aren’t possible in actual Minecraft, but that doesn’t really detract from the story. My son and I enjoyed it.

Max Brooks does a great job weaving story with life lessons. Fressons within this book were sage advice for anyone. My son and I really enjoyed this telling. I also appreciate that Max pulls threads of the other books, which the previous Minecraft stories have not done. Looking forward to the next book!

The beginning of this book could be very triggering for anyone involved in or who has lost someone to a car crash. I wish I had been more prepared. Having lost several friends to cat accidents, including as a teen, this book felt intense for me the whole way through. I appreciate its effort in facing trauma, but if that was going to be the slant it could have included more healing efforts rather than just facing the truth. I guess that’s a good first step. My kiddo liked the Minecraft aspects, while I was the one grappling with emotions throughout it.

Good option to encourage involvement of dads

Revisado: 03-23-24

This book does a good job explaining why dads have a powerful role in the emotional development of kids. As a DV survivor single mother, I felt a lot of self judgement for the shortcomings of my singular influence on my son’s life. Considering the number of kids being raised by single moms, which is noted in this book, it would have been appreciated if there had been more guidance for helping children that simply won’t have a healthy male role model to help them develop emotional resilience. I came away feeling like my son is doomed rather than having actionable steps to still help him develop into an emotionally strong and happy individual. I know that wasn’t the intention of the book, but the way it came across felt disempowering for single moms.
