Not for Me

After reading others' reviews, I decided to give this massive tome a try.
It was not for me: not the nonsensical plot, not the violence, not the gore, not the evil, not the poor grammar (shame on the editors ~ who are being paid to know how to choose properly among the words me, myself, and I), not the mispronunciations, which were infrequent but abysmal (same on the reader).
This genre, and specifically the author Stephen King, is not one I will revisit.
I wish I could have my credit and the full 24 hours of my life back.

Overall this was fun to read. Not great literature, but an interesting tale, fairly well told.
The problems with it are (spoiler alert): that if you're paying attention, you will know well in advance who gets killed, and that the interconnections among virtually all of the characters stretch the suspension of disbelief to the absolute breaking point.
That said, I did enjoy the book and may choose another Lucy Foley when I'm looking for a lightweight escapist read.

OK. Let me start by saying that up until now I've been a fan of Kristin Hannah's books. They're easy reads with somewhat predictable plots.

But not this time.

This book consists of endless repetition, reiteration, redundancy, repeating and repeating over and over and over the twin themes of self pity and whining. Over and over again. Oh, and long deep kisses over and over. Oh, and women being carried by strong men over and over and over. And tiny this and tiny that, everything is tiny, tiny, tiny - over and over.

The syntax was never good prose, but became downright awful in places, for example, "her high heels sounded like gun blasts on the linoleum." Really?

I am angry that I paid good money for the credit I wasted on this sorry excuse for a novel. Don't make the same mistake I did.

Wow! Ian McEwan has done it again. A superb novel, rich in character, beautifully told. It is exquisite, excruciating at times, filled with insight about human nature and what makes us who we are.

My only complaint is that Simon McBurney has NO IDEA how to pronounce the German that's found throughout the novel. As a person who is bilingual in English and German, I found his mispronunciations execrable. In English he was fine.

In summary, if you are looking for a grand, wonderful, sweeping novel ~ and you do not speak German ~ this is a must read.

This book stretches suspension of disbelief waaaaaay past the breaking point.
There are no likable characters. The plot is ridiculous.
The big buildup to the "twist" at the end comes as no surprise at all.
The author seems to choose prepositions at random, and very rarely gets one right.
The reader mispronounces words, tries unsuccessfully to adopt foreign accents, and just overdoes it.
It is an awful book.
I won't read anything by this author or listen to anything read by this narrator again.
Don't waste your time.

Ken Follett is one of my all-time favorite authors. That's because I've read many of the books he wrote after this one.
This is a loser. The plot requires a huge helping of suspension of disbelief. The syntax is clunky. The characters do not behave the way real people would. The reader mispronounces a lot. There just isn't anything I can think of to recommend that you spend a credit or 15 of your hours of your time listening to this loser of a book. I would absolutely have returned it, but I was "saving" it as a great listen, and waited too long for it to qualify for their return policy. :(

I purchased this based on other listener's reviews. My review is this: Don't Bother.
There are much better courses on CBT out there.

This reader has poor grammar, poor pronunciation, a stiff reading style, and he's repetitive.
(One oft recurring example: You don't pronounce the "T" in listen. You don't pronounce the "T" in glisten. So don't pronounce the "T" in often!) Another: You are a professional Audible lecturer, so learn when to use me, myself and I. They are not interchangeable.

One of his patients was especially difficult to listen to. She was almost incoherent, constantly using the word "like" as a place filler. At one point I actually counted: She said "like" 15 times in one short paragraph. My jaw was clenched so tight by the end of this session that I can't tell you what it was about. I get it, she's a patient and you want to include patient interviews. But choose someone who actually speaks coherently.

There are much better courses out there if you're interested in CBT, how it works, how to apply it to your life. My recommendation is this: Try one of those. Don't bother with this one, it's just annoying.

The best I can say about it is that it was just sort of almost OK.

Great Story but...

Let me start this review by saying that this book was entertaining.
The story line kept my interest, and George Guidall is one of my favorite readers (Will Patton being the other).

But (and, sorry to say, it's a big but)... This novel contains some of the worst grammar I've ever, EVER heard. Here are actual examples of sentences and sentence fragments from the text:

"If it's myself you're angry with, please let me know.
And what are you but myself speaking in a strange tongue?
The fault lay entirely with himself.
If any more threats are made against myself or Anna...
You do the same thing every day with only myself for company."

How on earth did these sentences get past an editor? Somebody, SOMEBODY PLEASE teach this author to use the word "ME!"

Other than butchering the English language this horrible way, the book was enjoyable, and I will gird my proverbial loins to withstand terrible overuse of the word "myself" and read the sequel.

S-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-s Suspension of Disbelief...

This is an entertaining book, make no mistake. But it's not great literature. And it's only borderline good literature.
The plot is completely beyond the realm of possibility, and the reader must absolutely give over to the suspension of disbelief to enjoy the read.
It has grammatical flaws and clunky syntax galore. Just a couple of examples: "She had tried to act normally." "He acted strangely when he heard..." You get the idea.
The authors and editor should really check their word usage as well. Here's a sentence that has no excuse
for being in any published work: "It has the feel of the trembles that precede an earthquake." Earthquakes
don't have "trembles." They have "tremors."
All in all, though, it's entertainment on a light level.

One of the best climbing books I've ever read.
This book is fascinating, beautifully written, and the narrator was perfect.
If you have ever climbed, or have any interesting climbing at all, don't miss this one.
