Historia
Dublin, 1841. On a cold December morning, a small boy is enticed away from his mother, and his throat, savagely cut. While this could be just one more small, sad death in a city riven by poverty, inequality, and political unrest, this murder causes a public outcry - for it appears the culprit, a feckless student named John Delahunt, is also an informant in the pay of the authorities at Dublin Castle. And strangely, this young man seems neither to regret what he did nor fear his punishment.

Only Real Life...
Revisado: 11-16-20
This was a good retelling of the history of an actual criminal--fascinating at the behaviors and actions that often seemed in conflict with any young man struggling to make his way into a respectable life with a wife from a "good" family. But it's all the more horrifying how thoughtless and "normal" Delahunt's murders and other crimes are worked into the story of his overall struggle.

Historia
In 1955, an American farming couple saw a film about the thousands of Korean children orphaned by the Korean War. Through a special act of Congress, they were authorized to adopt eight of these children - which marked the advent of international adoption. Since that time, there have been over 170,000 children adopted out of Korea to more than 30 countries. Korean adoptee Glenn Morey and his wife, Julie Morey, spent six years interviewing 100 Korean adoptees from around the world. This stunning Audible Original is comprised of 15 first-person accounts....

Heartbreaking but not Depressing
Revisado: 11-16-20
As a Korean American, I can totally connect with many of their experiences of "self-racialization" and sense of belonging nowhere, and many of the feelings and experiences they are generous to share. However, it was also historically informative about Korean cultures and biases that allowed the trend post-Korean War to adopt so many unwanted children to other countries, including the U.S., Australia, France, and Denmark. I think more than Korean people can identify with the stories of these adoptees, including other adoptees from other countries and within the U.S. Details may differ, for good or ill, but I think that echo of "abandonment" may be common across any person who was adopted, whether the adoption was "successful" or not so happy.

a favorite with good period detail beyond fashion.
Revisado: 03-16-17
Heyer does such a nice job with romance between the rich and handsome and beautiful people this was an interesting change. focusing on a diminished family fortune and thwarted young love allows this tender story of Jenny and Adam. They forge an awkward alliance that grows into a relationship of care and different love. Heyer even has an opportunity to poke a little fun at the genre as the country nervously awaits news of a great battle.

Armitage a wonderful reader, but echo-y recording
Revisado: 08-23-14
Where does Venetia rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Middle-ish.
Richard Armitage, the wonderful Brit actor is a terrific reader for this period romance, but there's an echo effect in the way it was recording. That is distracting and annoying.

Historia
Before Liz Lemon, before Weekend Update, before Sarah Palin, Tina Fey was just a young girl with a dream: A recurring stress dream that she was being chased through a local airport by her middle-school gym teacher. She also had a dream that one day she would be a comedian on TV. She has seen both these dreams come true. At last, Tina Fey's story can be told. From her youthful days as a vicious nerd to her tour of duty on Saturday Night Live. Tina Fey reveals all, and proves what we've always suspected: You're no one until someone calls you bossy.
