Half the show is missing
Revisado: 07-03-24
Very funny, but an awful lot of the show was visual gags. I'm going to try to find a video instead.

Historia
Cursed gems, snake gods, lost temples, dark jungles, and volcanoes. It could serve as a laundry list of things Ruby wanted nothing to do with. Yet now she's on her way, in search of a missing friend and with only a journal of cryptic clues and a notorious band of dungeoneering dwarves to guide her.

Did no-one listen to the narrator?
Revisado: 07-04-18
I was completely distracted by Faust Kells' constant mispronunciations. I mean, really? The place was lit by flaming brassieres? That is the sort of mistake I would expect a twelve-year-old to make. Some of them, I found myself wondering if he was doing on purpose.
A pretty good prequel to the other two books in the series.

Historia
It turns out, the "Demon Weed" actually is a gateway drug! Who knew? Tom Perkinje certainly didn't. He had never smoked anything in his life, but as the new kid in town trying to make friends, he foolishly let his new buddy Reggie talk him into trying a joint that he'd picked up from a new dealer. Before he knew it, Tom was having a seriously bad trip; a total out-of-body experience where the world had dissolved around him.

Good, but not great.
Revisado: 06-13-17
A good story, with compelling characters, but it suffered from the author's tendency to have exposition dump chapters. I'm glad that he had everything worked out, but a chapter on the cosmology of the Abyss works better in an appendix, as opposed to breaking up the narrative flow. That said, I am going to buy the sequel.

Historia
After five years as a city guard, Durham's horizontal career trajectory adds a corkscrew when a mis-delivered order assigns him to caravan duty for an eclectic group of dwarves who hire themselves out as professional dungeoneers. No ruler wants to leave a powerful magical weapon lying about in a dungeon where just any prophesied upstart can stumble across it and use it to overthrow the kingdom. That's where the dungeoneers come in.

Magnificent
Revisado: 05-08-17
I first bought this audiobook more than a year ago. It fell off of my radar, and I didn't listen to it until recently. I deeply regret the delay.
There are so many great lines in this book. Not just funny ones, although they abound, but moving ones, and thought provoking ones too. Near everyone one, at some point or another in their life, considers being an author. Mr. Russell's skill with a descriptive phrase has convinced me that I am not one.
And Faust Kells. He does not read this book. He does not narrate this book. He PERFORMS this book. I am afraid that in some parts, he overshadowed the material with which he was working. Call it a give and take.
But, I don't want to oversell it. So, yeah, it's pretty good.

Historia
Professional heroes kill and loot deadly monsters every day, but Gorm Ingerson's latest quest will be anything but business as usual. The adventuring industry drives the economy of Arth, a world much like our own but with more magic and fewer vowels. Monsters' hoards are claimed, bought by corporate interests, and sold off to plunder funds long before the Heroes' Guild actually kills the beasts. That's a terrible arrangement for the Shadowkin; orcs, goblins, kobolds, and their ilk must apply for to become Noncombatant Paper Carriers to avoid being killed and looted by heroes.

This needs a sequel!
Revisado: 01-29-17
I cannot believe that more than two years have gone by, and we have not yet seen a sequel to this excellent book. That is truly, my only complaint. It felt like these characters' adventure was just starting, and lo, do I wait for a sequel.
I mean, I have other complaints. The author has the unfortunate tendency to drop a brick joke into an otherwise dramatic scene. Sometimes, the tonal shifts between over-the-top parody and drama were a touch jarring. And a lot of walk-on characters were introduced by name, causing me to wonder with each of them, "Will this person be important later?" (Although this may have been intentional on the author's part.)
But all of this pales into insignificance next to the fact that I WILL PAY MONEY FOR A SEQUEL OF THIS, PLEASE!

There are reasons we fear the night. He's not one of them. Bill Ryder was a dateless geek until he met a girl to die for. So he did. Sadly, that was just the beginning of his troubles. He awoke as a vampire, but fangs or not, he was still at the bottom of the food chain. Join Bill in this hilarious tale of immortal monsters and the man who's not afraid to flip them off, even if it gets him killed - again.

Good story; minor things bothered more than...
Revisado: 12-12-16
...they probably should. Maybe that's a function of the rest being so good? It bothers me that the narrator does not apparently know the difference in pronunciation between "voila" and "viola". Other thing: author overused the trope of spelling out the horrible worst case scenario before revealing no, that's not actually what happened.
Still, enjoyable. At times, incredibly so.

It's rare for a book to get to me so strongly that I'm brought to tears. This book, like it's predecessor before it, has done that.
