In 1937, there are recesses in Appalachia no outsiders have ever explored. Two government-sponsored documentarians from Cincinnati, Ohio - a writer and photographer - are dispatched to penetrate this wilderness and record what they find for President Roosevelt’s Works Progress Administration. For photographer Clay Havens, the assignment is his last chance to reboot his flagging career. So when he and his journalist partner are warned away from the remote Spooklight Holler outside of town, they set off eagerly in search of a headline story.

T. Ryder Smith is the best narrator
Revisado: 07-10-23
I found this title after listening to The New and Improved Romie Futch. The narration was outstanding so I sought more titles narrated by T. Ryder Smith. I wasn't impressed with the writing of The Last Blue like I was with The New and Improved Romie Futch, but the story's good enough. It's a good beach read

perfect narration
Revisado: 07-01-23
The narration is perfect - literally nothing to improve on. The writing is brilliant, funny, and absurd. I thoroughly enjoyed this the first time I listened to it about a year ago. My bookclub selected this and it's just as good the second time around

This transcendent story follows four college friends who move to New York City, buoyed by ambition: Willem, an aspiring actor; JB, an artist; Malcolm, an architect; and, at the center, Jude, a withdrawn, brilliant attorney haunted by an unspeakable past. frustrating
Revisado: 07-24-22
Oof. If you've read any other reviews, you know already this is a sad story. It's also a frustrating one. The main character is so insistent that his life is small and he is unworthy. I wanted to scream "Go to therapy right now!" over and over again. It's also a story of unconditional love and unwavering friendship.

Ok, but not something I'd highly recommend
Revisado: 05-28-22
This came highly recommended, however I wasn't enthralled. I appreciated the writing about the ethical and philosophical questions about gene editing, but most of the biography felt like simple relaying of facts - this person did this and then this person did this, etc. I prefer more storytelling to help me understand the subject of the biography better.

Historia
Piranesi lives in the House. Perhaps he always has. In his notebooks, day after day, he makes a clear and careful record of its wonders: the labyrinth of halls, the thousands upon thousands of statues, the tides that thunder up staircases, the clouds that move in slow procession through the upper halls. On Tuesdays and Fridays Piranesi sees his friend, the Other. At other times he brings tributes of food to the Dead. But mostly, he is alone.

Among the most celebrated and beloved novels of 2021, Anthony Doerr’s gorgeous third novel is a triumph of imagination and compassion, a soaring story about children on the cusp of adulthood in worlds in peril, who find resilience, hope—and a book. In Cloud Cuckoo Land, Doerr has created a magnificent tapestry of times and places that reflects our vast interconnectedness—with other species, with each other, with those who lived before us, and with those who will be here after we’re gone.

Endearing characters in a well told story
Revisado: 11-16-21
Did you read All the Light We Cannot See and hold your breath as Marie-Laure hides in the attic broadcasting secret radio transmissions while von Rumpel searches the house below? If so, you'll do the same in this book when young Konstance of Cloud Cuckoo Land... well I'm not going to give away any spoilers!
These characters are as endearing, and the tale as captivating. Doerr takes his time weaving the stories of his characters together (be patient). The result is a sweet and satisfying novel with a little nail biting. And the narration is good, too!

cheesey and predictable
Revisado: 04-14-19
I spent a credit on this after reading so many rave reviews. However, this wasn't my cup of tea. You may enjoy this if you are a big fan of chick flicks and chick lit. A little too bubble-gummy for me. The narrator didn't do the book any favors.

Beautiful rendition

Beautifully written and narrated. I devoured the story. Definitely recommended for anyone who loves the classics. Circe comes alive as a rich and complex character - vulnerable and incredibly powerful in turns - surprisingly relatable.
