This is the first book I have read from this author, but now I am searching out the rest. Totally engaging and well developed characters. Deft writing. Throw in an excellent narrator, and I could not stop listening!

Great first novel — worth the read!
Revisado: 03-19-23
Good story and plot.
Needs a bit more research in at least one area. If main character is a psychologist, do more to understand what that means. Nice that she knew Louisiana is one of the few states where a psychologist can prescribe meds but made a silly error that would not have taken more than a few seconds on the internet to learn. The main character says (during a flashback to undergrad) that the plans to earn her PhD then hopefully her master’s degree. What?
Overall though, this is a strong debut novel, and I am looking forward to their next book!

Astounding, honest, hopeful, well researched
Revisado: 02-26-22
If you have ever struggled with ANY type of mental health challenges, you will find many nuggets of gold in this book!
While it is written specifically about the author’s work to learn about and grow through her history of repeated childhood trauma and eventual diagnosis with Complex PTSD (C-PTSD), any human should be able to connect to and find solace in what Ms. Foo has to say.
Her honesty is refreshing and disarming. The inclusion of several recordings from actual therapy sessions makes the audio version really stand out. To top it all off, her writing and narration are killer!
KUDOS, FOO!!! (I am your fan for life!)

Connie is suffering from dissociative amnesia - or at least seems to be. Now it is up to Emma to decide whether Connie can stand trial for her sins. Surprising, tender, hilarious!
Revisado: 04-23-20
As a psychologist, I am always wary of how mental health professionals are typically portrayed in novels and movies. I read the reviews, though, and I am so glad I got this book.
First, the two narrators are perfect. The way that Connie (the “mentalist” or patient) is read is especially strong.
Second, there is no cardboard in these two characters. Although I kept feeling like the story might tilt over into cliche, that never happened. Sure, there are themes that dabble in this territory, but the delightful thing is that the two main characters have so much depth and nuance that this never happens.
Natalie Daniels has a deft and light hand in the way she develops characters and unfolds a story. I cannot wait for another book!

Simultaneously puzzled, intrigued, delighted, and mildly repulsed by these characters. Highly recommend, especially to those who love psychological mysteries and who enjoy a bit of magical realism. Great stuff!

Interesting idea but kind of falls apart. Enough there that I stayed with it to the end, but definitely best for someone who is completely devoted to fantasy genre, I think.
Writing is imaginative in many places, but analogies often jarring and completely jerk the listener out of the story (e.g, describing trees made of metal as “like Etsy jewelry on steroids). Really. Not sure what the tone was intended to be, but these moments felt A) lazy, and B) annoying.
Too bad because I think this could have been a much stronger book. Where was the editor??
