I like this series, I’ve read it over a couple of times and decided to try out the audiobooks in spite of the fact that I know Michael Pauley is at the bottom of my list. This book proved that. I get that maybe he thinks he needs to raise his voice because the scene calls for it (it doesn’t) or perhaps he doesn’t notice hems doing it (I doubt it) but man, he needs to keep that in check. The story is good, I love the characters, but I think I 100% just need to stay away from stuff narrated by him, between the shouting and the weird monotone cadence, I just can’t.

I’ve come across a few series like this one since this was first published and truly enjoy the sub-genre. I love, LOVE Drake’s work and style. The characters are well put together and the plot flows nicely. My issue with this? One of the two narrators. Graves is fantastic, the voices & accents, the performance, it’s all just so well done. The other? Not so much for me. He’s a new to me narrator and honestly he sounds a little old for the part. Not only that, the accents just work, I mean how can you have Graves read one chapter where Dane’s southern accent is subtle and endearing, but the next chapter is narrated by Silas and Dane has an incredibly thick and over the top southern accent? It was such a turn off for me. I’ll have to see if he narrates the rest of the series and it will be a shame if he does because I won’t listen - will definitely re read them though.

It started off strong for me. I liked the premise of the story, but the further I got into it, the more my WTF lines became a constant look. No, I don’t enjoy quantum physics lessons throughout my romance, thanks. I had questions that remained unanswered, maybe in book 2, but this was bad enough to make me not want to attempt that one. The worst part is - aside from the total ick I get when authors use a sibling’s Ex as a main character AND ESPECIALLY considering the things said brother did with the MC- was the way the story fell apart for me with the added what, races of people? Are they shifters, Demi gods? No idea, nothing was truly even remotely explained. It felt like someone decided to just toss in everything that was on the side and see what sticks especially after the overabundance of explanations we got at the start. It was disconnected to say the least.

Mr Graves however did a good job. I like him. He’s still on my list of narrators I’ll listen to.

I loved it, I really did. It’s interesting because I don’t think I truly appreciated each couple until I read Alistair’s book, which then made me revisit the previous books. I was excited to listen to it of course, but that experience was a wee bit different.

Hate to say it, hate to compare, but Nick is no Michael Ferrioulo. It takes massive talent to pull off so many characters and make them all slightly different, enough to tell them apart. My biggest issue was the accent Nick chose to use for Lazarus. It came off like some strange not quite British, not quite that old school transatlantic either, just kind of I don’t know, undecided? Bit of a turn off for me. I do enjoy the way he reads and the emotion he projects, I think he’s a solid narrator and did ok with this book.

I 100% did this to myself. It's becoming easier to resist SW books, however sometimes I still fall for them. Let's break this down.

Plot/writing - lazy. You can't tell me otherwise when a simple google search would lead her to the definition of AWOL so she'd know she didn't use it right. It also would have told her that SUVs don't have sliding doors, those are minivans. The amount of eyebrow action in this book is insane. They twitch, crawl, crease, scrunch, damn near dance the tango. So, did I know who the main antagonist would be? No, but this also left a plot hole. It also felt as though when it comes to said plot line, A & B should lead to C but it was more like A & 2 = @. Like the sequence of events didn't quite fit, I don't know, I have a feeling that's just me. Oh, and I don't get why the characters are referred to more by their animal than their actual names. Oh the bush dog was mad - umm, what does her being a bush dog have to do with anything? NOTHING, that's what.

Characters - Bailey was so freaking cool in Havana's book, with the venom and the slithering and all snake. Her personality was quirky and fun, but as a main character? Nah, no thanks. She actually ended up being very unlikeable and annoying to me. She's like a wanna be Roni, with the random remarks thrown in here & there. As far as I remember, she only shifted once right? And Deke? Oh he only shifter to play with freaking yarn. Gah. He was absolutely boring and one dimensional, no different than any other male character in the book, nothing made him stand out much less fill the part of a main character. I also got zero chemistry, zero connection, just nothing between the two. They felt like they were together for the sake of not being alone.

The ONLY character I was truly interested in, and whose story I'd actually like to see play out is Isaiah's because yeah that sounds like drama. Will I though? Ugh, I don't know. I try and I try to stay away from SW but some of my favorite shifters books are still hers. I'm weak. Lastly, I shouldn't have wasted an audiobook credit on this, I should have read it, because Samantha Cook is such a meh narrator, she didn't do this justice.

How many books did Jill narrate in total in these series, like 12? In all those books I noticed something. Each side character has a somewhat distinctive personality, Dominic in particular. He was always goofy and just happy in the way Jill voiced him. However in his book, he totally lost that, he ended up having the same personality as Trey in book one. It's not so much as the tone of voice as it is the personality traits that got completely lost. I also noticed in this book in particular, she pronounced certain words kind of weird.

So yeah, the story was great because it wasn't insta love / insta mates, I liked Mila's personality and temperament and of course I liked Valentina. It was a solid listen.

I have adored this entire series for years. So well written, the characters are fantastic, but this is yet another one that was not improved by the audiobook. Yes, RIP Mr Obi, however, his performance is a no for me. Could it be because I had just finished re listening to a book by Zane Daniels? Maybe, maybe not. At the end of the day I would rather read the books than to listen to him.

Of course I love the series, the plot, the writing, the characters are pretty good too. I’m not a super huge fan of the narration though. This one took me back to Galen, some of the voices were a bit screechy, the volume levels went up and down quite a bit, kinda jarring when you are wearing headphones. I still think the narrator’s Russian accent needs work, in any case, Gray was sweet, Mason was fine, it’s a good book.

I adore this series, I truly do. The plot, the writing, the feels, just everything. As I said in my review of book 2, Daman and Warrin are my faves. IN PRINT. The thing is, the second I heard Graves do a Russian accent in book 2, I knew I'd have issues with this one. There are two narrators I enjoy that do the best Russian accents, Michael Ferraioulo and Kirt Graves. I wanted to hear that type of very pronounced accent in this book, because well, Warrin deserved that, but unfortunately I felt like Nick didn't give me that. Don't get me wrong, I thought he did ok, but I could definitely tell when he stumbled and lost it in different places, such a shame.

I still think this is a must listen, it's very enjoyable, it's a solid book, and the narration isn't awful, as long as you go into it knowing you'll get a watered down accent.

After having read & re read this series multiple times, I wasn't sure how I felt about Castor & Kyo. I mean I liked them, but they were not my favorite couple. I find them to be so sweet and funny with each other, I love how they can joke and be romantic and naughty and all that. I did not however like Kyo's older brother AT ALL, but that's to be expected. As far as the story goes, pretty solid, the conflict gets carried well through the series, the characters are well developed.

Now, as far as the narrator goes - he's ok. I do think this one was better than the last, not so "screamy" and the volume levels stayed pretty even. That being said, sometimes I had a hard time telling the difference between two characters in a dialogue because it's like he forgets he was attempting to do one differently, but then he remembers, so that was a little off putting. We got a glimpse of Warrin and oh man, I'm a little afraid for the next book. Warrin is said to have very thick, accented Russian and yeah, this narrator did not deliver that at all. I'll give it a listen of course, because I love having these in audio form, but Daman & War are my favorites, with Castor & Kyo as a close second.
