The cohost of the popular NPR podcast Planet Money provides a well-researched, entertaining, somewhat irreverent look at how money is a made-up thing that has evolved over time to suit humanity's changing needs.

Great summary

Well written for laymen to understand! It's sort of a cliff notes on economics with a little humor thrown in.

Historia
The son of a Protestant missionary and small-town pastor with secrets of his own to keep, Ferdinand Ward came to New York at 21 and in less than a decade made himself the business partner of a former president of the United States and was widely hailed as the "Young Napoleon of Finance". In truth, he turned out to be a complete fraud, his entire life marked by dishonesty, cowardice, and contempt for anything but his own interests. This is a great story about a classic American con artist, told with boundless charm and dry wit by one of our finest historians.

There's waaayyy too much at the beginning about ward's parents' background. Once you get to him and his con jobs, it's pretty interesting. Not as much on Grant as I expected

It's what you'd expect...
Revisado: 10-01-22
It's another of the "80s actor" memoirs written because the author needs the money and wants to make excuses for what went wrong... In this case the title could be "Matthew Broderick and a Nose Job ruined my life". She tells the tid bits about dirty dancing you want and offers stories about her famous friends. She jumps around a lot on chronology, but otherwise it is pretty well written.

Historia
Most people know Andrew McCarthy from his movie roles in Pretty in Pink, St. Elmo's Fire, Weekend at Bernie's, and Less Than Zero, and as a charter member of Hollywood's Brat Pack. That iconic group of ingenues and heartthrobs has come to represent both a genre of film and an era of pop culture. In his memoir, McCarthy focuses his gaze on that singular moment in time. The result is a revealing look at coming of age in a maelstrom, reckoning with conflicted ambition, innocence, addiction, and masculinity.

I'd always wondered what happened to this dude. I figured he just flamed out because he was never that great of an actor. Turns out that's true, but also he was lazy and a drunk. That's about all I got out of this book.

Historia
This New York Times best seller is a thrilling account of one of the most pivotal moments in United States history. Six months after the Declaration of Independence, America was nearly defeated. Then on Christmas night, George Washington led his men across the Delaware River to destroy the Hessians at Trenton. A week later Americans held off a counterattack, and in a brilliant tactical move, Washington crept behind the British army to win another victory. The momentum had reversed.

I enjoyed this well enough, but it's not just about the Christmas night crossing and First Battle of Trenton. This book would better be titled "The Winter Campaign of 1776.“

Historia
Brad and Bone, the outrageous duo behind "the most fired show on the radio," have spent decades on top of the Atlanta airwaves with their infamous stunts and biting banter. From their annual "Blow Up Bash" to headline-making antics, they've built a legacy of chaos that fans and sponsors love—until they inevitably cross the line yet again and have to start over on another station. But after years of pranks and punchlines, cracks are forming in their partnership.

Quick, fun story!
Revisado: 01-18-22
This is one of my favorite "quick" fiction stories of the last year. If you grew up listening to the goofy DJ radio shows of the 80s/90s and/or in the South (especially Atlanta) it'll really make you smile. Important side note, it is actually read by the author - he just wrote it under a pen name. That's important in my choices.

Does George Washington still matter? Best-selling author Nathaniel Philbrick argues for Washington’s unique contribution to the forging of America by retracing his journey as a new president through all 13 former colonies, which were now an unsure nation. Travels with George marks a new first-person voice for Philbrick, weaving history and personal reflection into a single narrative.

Historia
Guilty Admissions weaves together the story of an unscrupulous college counselor named Rick Singer, and how he preyed on the desperation of some of the country's wealthiest families living in a world defined by fierce competition, who function under constant pressure to get into the "right" schools, starting with preschool; nonstop fundraising and donation demands in the form of multi-million-dollar galas and private parties; and a community of deeply insecure parents who will do anything to get their kids into name-brand colleges in order to maintain their own A-list status.

Enjoyed this one. Be forewarned that it's not a traditional biography as the author goes off on tangential tales comparing his life to the protagonist. But overall a worthwhile story with outstanding performance from Chris Abernathy who is my favorite audible reader.
