Historia
World War II endures in the popular imagination as a heroic struggle between good and evil, with villainous Hitler driving its events. But Hitler was not in power when the conflict erupted in Asia. His armies did not fight in multiple theaters, his empire did not span the Eurasian continent, and he did not inherit any of the spoils of war. That central role belonged to Joseph Stalin. Drawing on ambitious new research in Soviet, European, and US archives, Stalin’s War revolutionizes our understanding of this global conflict by moving its epicenter to the east.

Fresh Perspective on WWII
Revisado: 05-01-25
I liked the author’s fresh perspective which challenged long held views on Lend-Lease aid to Russia and Roosevelt’s performance in negotiations with Stalin. As an audio book listening experience I found the content better than the delivery, as the reader’s tone was more strident than I felt appropriate and it was wearing over the hours.

Historia
On a summer day in 1914, a nineteen-year-old Serbian nationalist gunned down Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo. While the world slumbered, monumental forces were shaken. In less than a month, a combination of ambition, deceit, fear, jealousy, missed opportunities, and miscalculation sent Austro-Hungarian troops marching into Serbia, German troops streaming toward Paris, and a vast Russian army into war, with England as its ally. As crowds cheered their armies on, no one could guess what lay ahead in the First World War.

Historia
For an entire generation, at home and abroad, the United States has waged an endless conflict known as the War on Terror. In addition to multiple ground wars, the era pioneered drone strikes and industrial-scale digital surveillance, weakened the rule of law through indefinite detentions, sanctioned torture, and manipulated the truth about it all. These conflicts have yielded neither peace nor victory, but they have transformed America. Today’s nativist resurgence walked through a door opened by the 9/11 era. And that door remains open.

Not Worthwhile
Revisado: 01-21-22
I found the book a tedious recounting of the past two decades without much original thought and no compelling support for its thesis.

Historia
In the most ambitious one-volume American history in decades, award-winning historian Jill Lepore offers a magisterial account of the origins and rise of a divided nation. In riveting prose, These Truths tells the story of America, beginning in 1492, to ask whether the course of events has proven the nation's founding truths or belied them.

Worthwhile and Ambitious Book
Revisado: 02-01-19
Great writing and delivery made this book a worthwhile investment of my time. In fact, I wish Author, Jill Lepore, had stretched it into a multi-volume set to allow even greater coverage of each period in history.

Historia
Most history is hierarchical: it's about emperors, presidents, prime ministers, and field marshals. It's about states, armies, and corporations. It's about orders from on high. Even history "from below" is often about trade unions and workers' parties. But what if that's simply because hierarchical institutions create the archives that historians rely on? What if we are missing the informal, less well documented social networks that are the true sources of power and drivers of change?

Didn’t live up to the very timely and intriguing title....
Revisado: 01-17-19
The title offered the potential for a great book. I stuck with it all the way to its unusual postscript, hoping it would come together but it did not. Instead, it was a loosely assembled series of somewhat interesting historical factoids, more like material to support speaking engagements than a legitimate book.

Historia
From the American Revolution through the Civil Rights movement, Americans have long mobilized against political, social, and economic privilege. Hierarchies based on inheritance, wealth, and political preferment were treated as obnoxious and a threat to democracy. Mass movements envisioned a new world supplanting dog-eat-dog capitalism. But over the last half-century that political will and cultural imagination have vanished. Why? The Age of Acquiescence seeks to solve that mystery.

Good topic but poorly written
Revisado: 06-09-15
A worthwhile topic but overly inflated academic writing style is tough to endure. I would look for another book on this topic and pass on this one.
