This is why authors shouldn’t narrate their own books.

This story is tragic, but the author’s monotonous, nasally voice distracted me from actual details of this unbelievable story.

I really am enjoying this book...AND YET...

Everything about this novel is excellent. The storyline, the characters, the details...and yet....the author loves using these two words-alot. It seems like every ten minutes into the narration, I hear "And Yet". Maybe Ms. Brown could have simply dropped the "And" and just used "Yet", or drop them both and use "But" once in a while. It's a small observation in an otherwise really good read...or listen.

Not what I expected from Elin Hilderbrand

I'm a big fan of Elin Hilderbrand and have read all of her books at LEAST once. I'm always excited when a new release comes out, and like all of them, waited anxiously for this one. I don't know if it's because Erin Bennett (to whom I usually love listening)
is maybe bored or tired of narrating Elin's books, but her narration of this one seemed overly animated and artificial. This made the content of the book seem lame, almost desperate. I don't even think I'll finish the listen on this one, and that is definitely a FIRST for me on one of Elin Hilderbrand's books. I guess no one is perfect. :(

Love the story, like the characters-love MOST of the narrators. The narrator that does the wife’s voice makes me gag. Whenever it’s the wife’s turn to narrate, I groan. She makes me dislike the character and I don’t want to dislike her! I’m going to push through because I really like the story.

I’m trying to get through this book, but honestly, I can only listen to it for so long. The different voices of the characters are terrible, especially the fake French accent of “Mimi”-it’s the worst! But I want to give the story a chance, so I will push through.

Mark Bramhall nailed the Maine "Downeast" accent. As a 63 year old native of Maine, I have known many people like the characters in Winslow's book. However, not everyone in Maine lives by the Saturday night pot luck suppers at the local grange hall. It was amusing and sad to read, but very well done.

This was my first John Grisham novel, and I had high hopes given his reputation. I found the book to drag on, but I stayed with it hoping it would pick up. Even the ending was a disappointment. I think Mary-Louise Parker was probably the best thing about the audiobook!

Anne Edmonds is perhaps the funniest comedian I have ever had the pleasure of laughing with. She has perfect timing, and her voice, during certain stories, cracks me up. I will definitely look for more from her.

SPOILER ALERT

I really enjoyed listening to this book until about 45 minutes to the end. I anticipated a twisty, creative "revenge" move on the husband's part, but instead, got some lame resolution to his predicament. It was as if the writer was tired of writing this book and had to create the ending under a deadline or something. There were many interesting characters that I hoped would have been developed more, but instead, were just left hanging. Finally...it's hard to believe that with all of his involvement in the crimes, he was just "cleared" with no further investigation from the experienced detective that was brought in on the case. The narrator was excellent, and the other voices he performed were quite good.

While a good listen, I cringed every time Ms. Plummer mispronounced the word "neurosurgeon". Seriously??
