Historia
It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow—and horror. As Princess Diana was laid to rest, billions wondered what Prince William and Prince Harry must be thinking and feeling—and how their lives would play out from that point on.

Enthralling—and I’m not a royal watcher
Revisado: 01-16-23
Beautifully told by Harry himself. This is ultimately a story of a man striving to understand and heal from the trauma he suffered at 12 years old along with the life long dysfunction of his family. He is sensitive, thoughtful, funny, resentful, and hurt. Makes one hope he can move on, find joy in his new life, and continue his good works in the world a little less burdened.

Historia
"A Simple Soul" is the perfect Gustave Flaubert short story: a tale told in spare, straightforward language full of richly observed details. The "soul" is Felicite, the exemplary servant of the austere Madame Aubin. Orphaned and illiterate, Felicite devotes her life to her mistress and Madame's two children. Her kindheartedness extends to her nephew and a local beggar, but it is seldom reciprocated.

Interesting to hear, though not the best story
Revisado: 08-17-21
It’s always interesting to read an author’s lesser known works. This felt more like Flaubert sketching out ideas for later development than a “real” character. Still very cool that audible has this relatively obscure title in its mix.

Historia
The Goldfinch is a haunted odyssey through present-day America and a drama of enthralling force and acuity. It begins with a boy. Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don't know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his unbearable longing for his mother, he clings to one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art.

An all time favorite
Revisado: 01-30-21
I loved The Goldfinch when I read it several years ago and it’s been a true treat to revisit it as an audiobook. Vivid characterization from the narrator adds to my memory and mental images of the story. My only complaint is I could have done without the cheesy music that cues up right at the end—like the last two sentences! The ending is so poignant and poetic and the music ruins it.

Historia
Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home. When she is 12, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great-uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel.

Best book I’ve encountered in a long time
Revisado: 09-04-20
Absorbing multiple plot lines, unique complicated characters, and beautiful writing make this one of the best (audio) books I’ve read all year. Moving, thought-provoking—I didn’t want it to end.

Historia
Mattie Ross, a 14-year-old girl from Dardanelle, Arkansas, sets out to avenge her Daddy who was shot to death by a no-good outlaw. Mattie convinces one-eyed "Rooster" Cogburn, the meanest U.S. marshal in the land, to ride along with her. In True Grit, we have a true American classic, as young Mattie, as vital as she is innocent, outdickers and outmaneuvers the hard-bitten men of the trail in a legend that will last through the ages.

Possibly the Best Audiobook Ever
Revisado: 03-25-17
I'm only about 1/4 through this book and I am confidently giving it full stars. Donna Tart's narration is so spot-on that an already compelling story is elevated to something all consuming. I've listened to good audiobooks, even very skillful ones, but this one is a work of art in itself. Perfection!
