Historia
Born into slavery on the tiny Caribbean island of Montserrat, Doll bought her freedom from her Irish planter father and built a legacy of wealth and power as an entrepreneur, merchant, hotelier, and planter that extended from the marketplaces and sugar plantations of Dominica and Barbados to a glittering luxury hotel in Demerara on the South American continent. Vanessa Riley’s novel brings Doll to vivid life as she rises above the harsh realities of slavery and colonialism by working the system and leveraging the competing attentions of the men in her life

Another Historical Fiction Masterpiece
Revisado: 05-14-22
I have to keep reminding myself to read historical fiction in historical context. I was very upset with Dolly initially. But after I reminded myself of the limited choices left to enslaved black women, I admired her. She did whatever she had to do to ensure the freedom and well being of her family, black and brown women, and enslaved.

Historia
In Shoutin’ in the Fire, Danté Stewart gives breathtaking language to his reckoning with the legacy of white supremacy - both the kind that hangs over our country and the kind that is internalized on a molecular level. Stewart uses his personal experiences as a vehicle to reclaim and reimagine spiritual virtues like rage, resilience, and remembrance - and explores how these virtues might function as a work of love against an unjust, unloving world.

This book...
Revisado: 11-30-21
A MUST read book!
This book spoke to my experiences of being a Southern Black Woman Christian who often has to navigate all white spaces while either being invisible or seen as an exception.
This book reminded me that being a Christian who is Black is a liberating and hopeful experience.
This book told me that we are more than "the hopes and dreams of the slaves;" we are the answer to the prayers of our ancestors.
This book reminded me that "BLACK LIVES MATTER was not just a rallying cry of protesting for black bodies; it was a love letter, monument, a testimony, a Hallelujah, a Yes Lord, a sermon, a dream...a cry to remember. "
This book is a modern Black literary classic.

Beautifully Written
Revisado: 07-20-21
The book did a beautiful job of shining light on issues with church folk. Let me be clear, the Church, as established by Jesus is flawless built on the Solid Rock. It is us church folk that are flawed. I highly recommend reading and reflection by Saints and Ain'ts alike.

Historia
If Maxine could put her finger on the moment when her life went into a tailspin, she would point back 20 years to the day her daddy died. She tells herself he’s the only person who ever really knew and loved her, and if he hadn’t left her behind, her future would’ve taken a different path. No absentee mother, no stepfather, no rebellious ripping and running during her teenage years. And no JD, who gave her wandering young heart a home, at least for a time.

Just as I Am is my truth. It is me, plain and unvarnished, with the glitter and garland set aside. Here, I am indeed Cicely, the actress who has been blessed to grace the stage and screen for six decades. Yet I am also the church girl who once rarely spoke a word. I am the teenager who sought solace in the verses of the old hymn for which this book is named. I am a daughter and mother, a sister, and a friend. I am an observer of human nature and the dreamer of audacious dreams.

Historia
Americans have built an empire on the idea of “race”, a falsehood that damages us all but falls most heavily on the bodies of Black women and men - bodies exploited through slavery and segregation and, today, threatened, locked up, and murdered out of all proportion. What is it like to inhabit a Black body and find a way to live within it? And how can we all honestly reckon with this fraught history and free ourselves from its burden? Between the World and Me is Ta-Nehisi Coates’ attempt to answer these questions in a letter to his adolescent son.
