Why we think it’s a great listen: A masterpiece like none other, Brooks’ powerful performance of Haley’s words has been known to leave listeners in tears. It begins with a birth in an African village in 1750, and ends two centuries later at a funeral in Arkansas. And in that time span, an unforgettable cast of men, women, and children come to life, many of them based on the people from Alex Haley's own family tree.

Perfect narration
Revisado: 02-26-20
Many of us remember the 1977 mini series, some of us had read the book, we all know something of the history. Avery Brooks narration takes this up one more level. I "saw" Kunta, Bell, Kizzy, Chicken George with every word. I enjoyed every minute of listening to this and found it hard to believe that my attention had been held for 30 hours. One of the few books I have listened to that had me sitting in the garage waiting for then end of a chapter.

Historia
For years, rumors of the "Marsh Girl" have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand.

Take the time, give it a chance
Revisado: 01-17-20
It was a little slow starting but I really enjoyed the story. This is a book that tells a story with out a lot of "background noise". Slow moving but worth the time. I didn't read the book and I suspect I got more from listening, it would be hard to read the dialect and accents. Would recommend to anyone

It’s a war filled with larger than life characters. There will be sledging, accusations of cheating, theft and performance enhancing drugs. And allegations that Australia was cheated out of a Guinness World Record. In the process of charting the scandal-plagued race to breed the world’s hottest chilli, the audio documentary lifts the lid on the subculture of ‘Chilli-heads’, hardcore chilli fans spread across the globe who compete in chilli eating and breeding competitions.

Surprised
Revisado: 09-11-19
I got this as an Audible Original and wasn't sure what to expect but figured I would give it a try. Was surprisingly good and if true I will never look at chili's the same. Not a fan of "super hot" chili's but an interesting look into the "chili head" culture (?) that leaves you with an unexpected sense of redemption and what sharing a meal is really all about.

Hard on the ears!
Revisado: 09-06-19
As many reviews have said suddenly Ayla sounds Russian! I was never wildly fond of Ms. Burr's vocals for anyone but in this one she lost it. One reviewer said she sounds like a Russian spy, another that she sounds like Natasha from Rocky and Bullwinkle. That pretty much describes it. Add the awful accent to a book filled with repetition and I don't think I can stand another 30 or so hours of this. Listen to books 1-4 but stop there, read 5 & 6 if you must but they are pretty much rehashing of 1-4.

The irascible A. J. Fikry, owner of Island Books - the only bookstore on Alice Island - has already lost his wife. Now his most prized possession, a rare book, has been stolen from right under his nose in the most embarrassing of circumstances. The store itself, it seems, will be next to go. One night upon closing, he discovers a toddler in his children’s section with a note from her mother pinned to her Elmo doll: I want Maya to grow up in a place with books and among people who care about such kinds of things. I love her very much, but I can no longer take care of her.

Historia
Although the Stock Market had crashed recently, it was too early for most people to predict that the Great Depression was about to get underway. For 39-year-old spinster schoolteacher Hildegarde Withers, it’s business as usual. And part of her usual business is taking her class for an outing to the aquarium to see the penguins. Instead, she spots the floating corpse of Wall Street broker Gerald Lester and quickly realizes that Inspector Oscar Piper of NYPD Homicide isn’t up to solving this tricky case.

Good story, good characters

Any additional comments?
Good story, good development. The ending was somewhat predictable but good nevertheless. It took me a bit to get used to the narrator. Originally found her to be a little annoying but soon got used to her and was okay. She doesn't do gender voices particulary well but well enough. Kept me guessing until the end, I thought I had it figured out earlier, and in fact I had, but then was led away again thinking it was someone else.

Sherlock Holmes is the greatest detective in literary history. For the first time since the death of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, a new Holmes story has been sanctioned by his estate, whetting the appetites of fans everywhere. Information about the book will be revealed as deliberately as Holmes himself would unravel a knotty case, but bestselling novelist and Holmes expert Anthony Horowitz is sure to bring a compelling, atmospheric story to life.

Revisado: 10-29-14

Derek Jacobi did a wonderful job with narration but this is NOT Doyle's Sherlock Holmes. This Sherlock is much more open to explaining his methods and generally a more personable Holmes than Doyle's. Good story anyway with a definate "Holmesian" feel

No
Which scene was your favorite?
Can't remember
Was The Case of the Gilded Fly worth the listening time?
Maybe
Any additional comments?
A very large cast of characters that got confusing. They were introduced in the beginning chapters but I found it hard to remember who was who. It probably would be a better read than listen because you could flip back to the start as necessary. Thouroughly unlikeable victim that should have been killed off sooner and way to many people with really good reasons for doing the deed

So so story, wretched narrator
Revisado: 07-24-14
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Probably not - I am only half way through the book and find the narrator more distracting that anything. Story isn't that strong either and I just want to shake Bernie and tell her to quite arguing. I understand the need to "do something"
Would you ever listen to anything by Anne Hillerman again?
Maybe by Anne Hillerman but not by Christina Delaine
What didn’t you like about Christina Delaine’s performance?
Annoying voice, bad accent, doesn't do gender differences well
