As good as the first book, if not better
Revisado: 10-14-22
This prequel stands on its own- it is more special if you’ve read They Both Die at the End, but this is a stunning stand alone novel. Be ready to cry- a LOT.

Helen arrives in Appalachian Ohio full of love and her boyfriend’s ideas for living off the land. Too soon, with winter coming, he calls it quits. Helped by Rudy - her government-questioning, wisdom-spouting, seasonal-affective-disordered boss - and a neighbor couple, Helen makes it to spring. Those neighbors, Karen and Lily, are awaiting the arrival of their first child, a boy, which means their time at the Women’s Land Trust must end. So Helen invites the new family to throw in with her.

Definitely worth it
Revisado: 04-28-22
The narrator is awesome. This book switched between 4 points of view and each one is very distinct, both in writing style and narration choices. The kid is especially authentic. The only reason I didn’t give the story 5 stars is because there are some loose ends that are not tied up by the end of the book, but it’s well worth it even with that.

MESSED. UP.
Revisado: 07-22-21
This novella takes you on a wild ride. Be prepared to get completely sucked in and finish this in one sitting. There are some gruesome vivid details-- definitely do not read if you are squeamish. Wonderful and complicated storytelling and unexpected twists throughout the whole 2 hours.

Nothing but love
Revisado: 12-24-20
The love story was good, but there was zero other substance to the book. I binged it in 24 hours but haven’t thought about it since.

Slow, but the ending pays off
Revisado: 09-01-20
The story seems winding and slow at times, but about 4 hours from the end, it picks up pace and intensity. Nice story with lots of Cuban history and politics written in!

Lesbian must read
Revisado: 04-17-19
Sarah Waters is a classic writer for lesbians. This is a much needed coming out/love story about a complex character in an interesting time period, set in wild situations that are somehow still universal. You will cry with Nancy through all her troubles like they are your own, but it is worth it to see her grow and realize who she is and how she should be treated.

My favorite book in the universe
Revisado: 03-25-19
Read this as a paper book first and the audiobook gave it incredible life. Lin’s performance is incredible, moving, and accurate. He gives this book the right hidden emotion behind Ari’s words and delivers just the right amount of teen angst. I have read the paperback twice but have listened to this recording five times. This book is my best literary find.
