Historia
In the wake of one of the most tumultuous conventions in Republican history, the party of Lincoln nominated in 1940 a prominent businessman and Wall Street attorney for president. Though Wendell Willkie would lose to FDR, David Levering Lewis reveals in this news-making reclamation that the story of this Hoosier-born corporate chairman's life is the story of an America that could have been. Popular for his down-home Midwestern charm and unaffected candor, Willkie possessed a supple intellect and a concealed disdain for political opportunism that, had he not died prematurely, would have revolutionized American politics with its advocacy of bipartisanship and social responsibility.

A condensed account of the life of Wendell Wilkie
Revisado: 12-05-19
Wendell Wilkie had an interesting life and the author does a noble job of condemning it all into a short book. He is skilled in dense writing. Sadly he offers very little detail that helps one understand who WW really was or what motivated him. I found the book unsatisfying, though well intended.

Historia
This, the first in the splendid series of Jack Aubrey novels, establishes the friendship between Captain Aubrey, Royal Navy, and Stephen Maturin, ship's surgeon and intelligence agent, against the thrilling backdrop of the Napoleonic wars. Details of life aboard a man-of-war in Nelson's navy are faultlessly rendered: the conversational idiom of the officers in the ward room and the men on the lower deck, the food, the floggings, the mysteries of the wind and the rigging, and the road of broadsides as the great ships close in battle.

One of my favorite books
Revisado: 12-05-19
The opening volume of a series that has been highly praised. It is one of my favorite books. Seems It is very accurate as to historical detail and language and customs of the time. The level of detail and description in the story also contribute to the very memorable characters and story. And Patrick Tull is the ideal reader, he makes me laugh out loud and the characters live vividly. I have listed to the book previously with a different and lesser reader. I am sure I will listen to it again.

Historia
The Anarchy tells the remarkable story of how one of the world’s most magnificent empires disintegrated and came to be replaced by a dangerously unregulated private company, based thousands of miles overseas in one small office, five windows wide, and answerable only to its distant shareholders. In his most ambitious and riveting audiobook to date, William Dalrymple tells the story of the East India Company as it has never been told before, unfolding a timely cautionary tale of the first global corporate power.

A magnificent history and cautionary tale
Revisado: 12-05-19
A beautifully produced book with extraordinary color plates showing geographic scenes and contemporary art. It is a deep and learned dive into the history of the East India Company, very well written in an engaging and energetic style with much illustrative detail. The author does a fine job of balancing the amount of background detail needed to understand the context. He implies relevance to current times but does so with an appreciated subtlety.
The reader has a great narrative voice BUT mispronounces many words which is distracting.

Compelling fifth trip with Inspector Gamache
Revisado: 08-07-18
This is the 5th book in the Inspector Gamache series. It's a complicated, slightly unfinished and not completely believable story written in an extraordinarily compelling way. A remarkable range of characters continues to be developed until it seems that each would be recognizable in the street walking by. We learn more about each, motivations, inner conflicts, and small pleasures. The insights ring true with a gentle kindness. When I read the first novel, I found the side trips that the author likes to take about art or poetry, or history or.....to be rather distracting but I have come to enjoy each twist and turn of these byways. This one tours the totems of the Queen Charlotte Islands in British Columbia, provides some insights into the inner world of antique dealing, relates the chaos in Berlin after the fall of the wall and more. I could not stop listening, listened immediately to some parts for a second time and have moved on to the sequel which will reportedly tie off the loose ends from this one.

Historia
The devastation of Pearl Harbor and the American victory at Midway were prelude to a greater challenge: rolling back the vast Japanese Pacific empire island by island. This masterful history encompasses the heart of the Pacific War - the period between mid-1942 and mid-1944 - when parallel Allied counteroffensives north and south of the equator washed over Japan's far-flung island empire like a "conquering tide", concluding with Japan's irreversible strategic defeat in the Marianas.

Masterful history of the early Pacific War
Revisado: 05-22-17
What did you love best about The Conquering Tide?
I had decided that i should learn about the war in the pacific, and discovered it to be completely enveloping. The detailed historical context setting at the beginning seemed long at the time but later I realized its importance. The writer had completely mastered the material . I went on immediately to listen to the next volume and await the last volume .
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Conquering Tide?
The Pearl Harbor Attack - the moments in the water after the ships were under attack.
What about P. J. Ochlan’s performance did you like?
Very competent, so much so that I hardly noticed the narration.
Any additional comments?
This book stayed with me for weeks, and I shared lots of facts and insights with others. I have given it as a gift.

Acclaimed scientist Hope Jahren has built three laboratories in which she's studied trees, flowers, seeds, and soil. Her first book might have been a revelatory treatise on plant life. Lab Girl is that, but it is also so much more. Because in it, Jahren also shares with us her inspiring life story, in prose that takes your breath away.

Historia
In the best-selling tradition of Bill Bryson and Tony Horwitz, Rinker Buck's The Oregon Trail is a major work of participatory history: an epic account of traveling the entire 2,000-mile length of the Oregon Trail the old-fashioned way, in a covered wagon with a team of mules - which hasn't been done in a century - that also tells the rich history of the trail, the people who made the migration, and its significance to the country.

Revisado: 05-22-17
Where does The Oregon Trail rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
First rank
What other book might you compare The Oregon Trail to and why?
It is really quite unlike anything else that I have read, written by someone with a unique outlook and with a fine way with words.
Which scene was your favorite?
So many..... perhaps the mule bridge crossing when the two men were boys.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Both, several times
Any additional comments?
I had thought that the subject matter would not interest me and was originally disappointed that this was a re-creation story, interlaced with personal history and experience. I was so wrong.

Historia
The Hopkins Touch offers the first portrait in over two decades of the most powerful man in Roosevelt's administration. David Roll shows how Harry Hopkins, an Iowa-born social worker who had been an integral part of the New Deal's implementation, became the linchpin in FDR's - and America's - relationships with Churchill and Stalin, and spoke with an authority second only to the president's.

Fascinating book, unknowledgeable reader
Revisado: 05-22-17
Where does The Hopkins Touch rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
In the first rank. A truly fascinating book, with some relatively new sources and information. The very dense nature of the material was very well handled by the author
Who was your favorite character and why?
N/A
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
The performance was not up to the book. The reader mispronounced many words, not only place names (in a biography and history book !) but some general vocabulary which I found very distracting. He also did not seem to understand the sense of some of what he was reading, as evidenced by oddly placed pauses and emphasis.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes
Any additional comments?
Thanks for adding this to the available books...Helped me get it read for my book group.
