This is just terrible.
Revisado: 04-21-25
I thought the last books were okay. I couldn't stand this one. The characters, the plot, the unfunny jokes - every part of this was bad. I tried finishing it a handful of times and gave up with four hours left. From the other reviews here, it sounds like the end wouldn't have been good either. I've never cringed so much in my life. I don't know how we got here, but I'm glad to let go of this story.

I'll say it - I'm bored by this series
Revisado: 12-27-24
Let me start by saying that, even if the next book is just a single drawn-out encyclopedia entry, I would read it in a heartbeat. I'm in too deep, and I don't think I could hop off the train. Still, it's like all the stuff that's good about the series - character growth, plot, character interactions, action, etc - is all completely overshadowed by the numbing monologue of core/bloodline/constitution stuff. It's just so monotonous. I find myself asking, "why am I reading this" time and time again. Now don't get me wrong, when the MC is actually experiencing more than just his own musings, it's great. And I like the battles, plot, and the way cleverness is used to overcome a stronger opponent. But again, that's a sliver of this book. If the author reads this comment, please don't think you've lost a fan. I'll be one of the first to preorder the next book. But I'm begging for a reset. There's a place for this extreme MC self actualization. But it should be a more balanced part of what's being shared. The tripod that is this series is missing a leg or two.

Revisado: 08-24-24
This is the first book in probably three books where I feel like Shirtaloom got his groove back. There was good pacing, less moodiness, and an all-around great plot. I am so excited to see what happens next.

That was exhausting. I'm ready for more.
Revisado: 03-30-24
That was nearly 30 hours of descriptions. I knew the core creation was going to be a slog, but dang. I feel like I've read a textbook. But at this point, I will keep listening to these books until he gets past S Grade. I'm addicted. Brink could just put ones and zeros on paper, and I'd listen in, waiting for whatever skill or class was at the end of it. Was it the best in the series, not by a long shot. But it needed to happen to keep the rest of the story moving. I'm fine with it and ready for what's next.

Following the devastating attack on Yaresh, its people are left to pick up the pieces. The city lies in ruins, but its decimated defenders have more to deal with than just reconstruction. Jason's actions during the battle have brought unwelcome attention from allies and enemies alike. While the adventurers question his loyalty, the messengers question his very nature. Not Amazing, But It Doesn't Matter Because I'm Addicted
Revisado: 12-16-23
HWFWM was the first LitRPG I ever read. The first six books were fantastic. But since then, the story has struggled to know where it's heading.
Some of this is the nature of the genre. Other series (many that have 10 books or so) have main characters who've become too powerful and have stakes that are too low.
But specific to this book, it gets a little monotonous. I'm honestly tired of hearing about Jason's amazing abilities. The whole story is either him talking about how awesome he is, him brooding because he's awesome, or other people talking about him being awesome. We get it.
And every time I hear about "his brother, his lover, and his best friend," it makes me want to pull my hair out. What makes the series awesome is the characters, their banter (the banter that's not just about Jason's skills), and the plot. Please give us that, Shirt.
That said, this book took an interesting turn towards the end in which the stakes are suddenly high again and moving towards something potentially greater. I'm excited for book 11.
Still, the overall theme here is that the series has lost its focus.
And yet, I'm addicted. I will keep buying and listening to these stories. I care about the characters and the politics and the magic that is this story. I'm not thrilled with the last four books, but I will keep coming back for more. I have hope that the next one will be better. So I gave this book a good rating because of what I want it to be.
Also, Heath is an amazing narrator, but the editing on this book was rough at points.

Historia
Accidentally murdered by a cleric in another universe during a botched resurrection, Arnold, a semi-pro gamer, wakes upon an altar to find himself incarnated into the overweight body of a farmer who could have been his fatter twin. He’s not the hero. He’s not the villain. He’s certainly not the chosen one who is there to save the world. He’s a clerical error. It could be a bad joke, but apparently, it happens so often that they have a standard procedure for returning you.

Amazing LitRPG
Revisado: 10-22-23
I've been struggling to find a good book in this genre for a bit. If you like dungeon crawler Carl or he who fights with monsters, this is a good choice. There's character development, an interesting plot, a cool world, and a great leveling system. I highly recommend. I would have read this book sooner, but I thought the title looked stupid. I was wrong. I'm excited to read the next one.

I'm Waiting for Shirt to Get His Groove Back
Revisado: 04-28-23
Amazing series - but a weaker story. I think this is the inevitable problem with lit RPG. The characters start out so weak, and the progression gives the reader the same serotonin boost of a video game. But then they become strong, and the stakes suddenly start to feel flat. I will keep reading these books until the series is done, but something does feel off. I don't know how shirt could fix it either. But then again, he has done amazing things before. so who's to say he won't again.
As always, Heath's performance is amazing.
