Historia
In November 1987, a young couple on an overnight trip to Seattle vanished without a trace. A week later, the bodies of Tanya Van Cuylenborg and her boyfriend Jay Cook were found in rural Washington. It was a brutal crime, and it was the perfect crime: With few clues and no witnesses, an international manhunt turned up empty, and the sensational case that shocked the Pacific Northwest gradually slipped from the headlines.

With the deft plotting and organization missing from too many novels, this work of non fiction is a riveting narrative. The author does a great job of conveying the various characters without devolving into "good"/"evil" tropes. At times one can almost empathize with the accused. The Wall Street Journal review which led me to this book mentioned the ponderous DNA expositions as a detriment. I was pleasantly surprised that, rather than be a slog, they contained easy to understand information without appearing to be "dumbed down."

Historia
In the early 1900s, as the oppression of Russia's imperial rule takes its toll on Finland, the three Koski siblings - Ilmari, Matti, and young Aino - are forced to flee to the United States. Not far from the majestic Columbia River, the siblings settle among other Finns in a logging community in southern Washington, where the first harvesting of the colossal forests begets rapid development, and radical labor movements begin to catch fire. The brothers face the excitement and danger of pioneering this frontier, while Aino devotes herself to organizing the industry's first unions.

A wonderful story of the lives of the 1890-1910 wave of Scandinavian settlers to this country. Some of my ancestors were among them.

Historia
This book is a debut by a Chinese-American writer about a prodigal son whose unexpected return forces his newly wealthy family to confront secrets and unfulfilled promises. After years of chasing the American dream, the Zhen family has moved back to China. Settling into a luxurious serviced apartment in Shanghai, Wei, Lina, and their daughter, Karen, join an elite community of Chinese-born, Western-educated professionals who have returned to a radically transformed city. What We Were Promised explores the question of what we owe to our country, our families, and ourselves.

Engaging story, well written and beautifully read
Revisado: 04-17-19
Funny how, in such an exotic locale, the situations described feel familiar. There are some aspects to the story which would unique to China but the feelings and actions of the characters were so genuine that they were relatable.

You'll like it
Revisado: 04-11-10
First off, Ron Perlman is one of the best narrators I've heard in a long while. With "The Strain", he has good material to showcase his resonant voice and even tone. Contrary to Hollywood's current pro-vampire agenda, "The Strain" is a refreshingly straightforward tale that is well-paced. Despite being peopled with stock characters, it still held my attention and made me what to hear what happened next. I look forward to the next installment.
