I usually get upset with people who review a book they couldn't finish but now I'm doing it too! (I'm doing it because I'm mad that I can't return a sale book, even after being a subscriber for around 20 years. I have rarely returned any books.) I read a few 5 star reviews and thought it sounded cute, but I could not listen to it because the male character seemed like such a misogynistic jerk! Who needs that in an escape novel? I shouldn't have skipped my usual practice of checking the one and two star reviews before buying. Buyer beware!

Yes, I admit I’ve read quite a few books inspired by Pride and Prejudice, but Good Fortune is a new and entirely welcome addition to the field. Wonderful characters in a Chinese family in New York and the folks in their orbit had me as engaged as the original. Entertaining and laugh out load funny.

I don’t usually review books but wanted to add my voice to say this was a fun book and it wasn’t “political” at all. It felt to me like some reviewers are trying to punish the author. One paragraph spoke in favor of unions to protect workers and twice he mentioned how folks can be duped into voting for people who don’t have their interests at heart. If those things seem offensive, this might not be for you, but both appealed to my humanist nature.

Would you try another book from Kim Harrison and/or Marguerite Gavin?

I enjoyed the first book in the series and wanted to like this one too, but it was too gruesome, not lighthearted enough, and the main character became more and more annoying. Having the heroine continually make wrong assumptions and bad decisions didn't work for me. Character flaws can invigorate a story, but this time they didn't.
