Historia
Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

What a Tale
Revisado: 08-16-23
The opioid epidemic that swallows entire families and communities told through the eyes of the sad soul of Demon. Compassion for all those who struggle with addiction, and gratitude for the fact that it was not part of my life. A story so well told that you truly understand the struggles of the characters and why it did indeed deserve the Pulitzer Prize.

Enjoyable Feel Good Story
Revisado: 07-29-23
I enjoyed this story that was generally uplifting because I always knew it would end well. A bit repetitive at times and at times I wanted to just shake the characters for not facing each other and assuming the worst. But I suppose that’s the way we are at times.

Interesting look at the golden age of Hollywood through the eyes of a girl who doesn’t want to be the star, but wants the experience of being around the filming. Add in a ghost for a twist & you get a different type of historical fiction.

Historia
Finlay Donovan has been in messes before—after all, she's an author and single mom who's a pro at getting out bloodstains for rather unexpected reasons—but none quite like this. After she and her nanny/partner-in-crime Vero accidentally destroyed a luxury car that they may have "borrowed" in the process of saving the life of Finlay's ex-husband, the Russian mob got her out of debt. But now Finlay owes them.

Historia
Madrid, 1957. Under the fascist dictatorship of General Francisco Franco, Spain is hiding a dark secret. Meanwhile, tourists and foreign businessmen flood into Spain under the welcoming promise of sunshine and wine. Among them is 18-year-old Daniel Matheson, the son of an oil tycoon, who arrives in Madrid with his parents hoping to connect with the country of his mother's birth through the lens of his camera. Photography - and fate - introduce him to Ana, whose family's interweaving obstacles reveal the lingering grasp of the Spanish Civil War.

Uncovering the Past
Revisado: 03-13-22
Another great book that opens your eyes to the struggles of the Spanish people under the Franco dictatorship. Americans trying to do business in Spain living entirely apart from the realities of the citizens. Children stolen from their birth parents, sometimes because of political ideology, & sold to adoptive parents.Excellent audio performance that added the Spanish language & accents to the book.

As Caroline’s life unravels due to her husband’s infidelity, so do the lives of Nella & Eliza in the late 1700s as the secret of the Apothecary is exposed for dispensing deadly potions to women who were wronged. I liked to narration & the overlaps between the two stories.

Great True Story
Revisado: 04-16-21
Maybe being a librarian makes me partial to this story, but I loved it. What this library did for its subscribers during the occupation of Paris was amazing. The heroic efforts of the librarians allowed literacy to stay alive during a difficult time. Chapters alternating between WWII & 1980s we learn of the family life, friendships, betrayals, and romances of Odile and how a young teen enters her life in America & how this new friendship develops. Amazing to learn all the facts about the American Library in Paris. If I ever get to visit Paris again, this will be one of my stops!

Historia
Emerson Knight is introverted and eccentric and has little to no sense of social etiquette. Good thing he's also brilliant, rich, and (some people might say) handsome, or he'd probably be homeless. Riley Moon has just graduated from Harvard Business and Harvard Law. Her aggressive Texas spitfire attitude has helped her land her dream job as a junior analyst with megabank Blane-Grunwald. At least Riley Moon thought it was her dream job, until she is given her first assignment: babysitting Emerson Knight.

Another Wacky Story
Revisado: 03-05-21
Janet Evanovich (& Phoef Sutton) have given us a new team of Riley & Emerson, to entertain our minds with a wild ride story and the usual bumbling bad guys. Humor, narrow escapes, and a cast of quirky characters will take you hunting for gold & leave your everyday worries behind. Lorelei King’s narration is spot on for this listen.
