Very Contrived

I don’t know what enticed me to purchase and listen to this book. All of the kinky sex not appreciated or necessary, the story contrived and the narrator has a flat, boring tone and voice.

Great Story
Revisado: 07-11-19
It’s my second time reading or listening to it. I’ve enjoyed it more the second time than the first time when I read it for book club. It certainly is interesting family dynamics between the generations and I like that the mom got the apartment back. But sad that she died in the end I guess it would go to the girls then. Very, very interesting characters. This book holds up over time.

Kristen Leonard is done with setups. She’s not interested in your son or your nephew or your butcher or the guy who mows your lawn, thank you very much, grandma! After all, she’s a modern woman - she’ll take her chances on the algorithms of online dating to find her ideal man. Before long, she meets a man who might just be the one - he’s hilarious, quick-witted, and full of heart. And when she meets up with Cameron in real life, he certainly looks exactly like his profile picture...but something’s not quite right.

Since I don’t usually like short stories I thought I’d try this one anyway as it was free and I was between books. It’s a very creative love story that has a happy ending, probably not something I’d be interested in a longer version but this author has a ability to write contemporary love stories.

Historia
Sir John Penlyon is planning to spend Christmas at his estate with his niece and his friend Danby, the closest thing he has to family since disowning his daughter years ago. (She eloped with the parson, who was, of course, penniless.) Danby suggests that at Christmastime the estate needs the presence of small children, and offers to find some - the “hirelings” - despite Sir John’s skepticism. Three children duly arrive, and the youngest, precocious four year-old Moppet, quickly endears herself to Sir John.

The overall story was compelling and a good idea. Until the last sister Varya and the monkeys, very boring. The ending only saved by Ruby’s presence and future plans.

Well written and read by a great cast. Ms Egan tells a captivating story of family love, war’ the gangster world and women’s independence. Intertwining time in and out, back and forth as the reader I was mesmerized to the end.

Best Story Line with Intertwining Stories
Revisado: 07-10-13
Would you listen to And the Mountains Echoed again? Why?
One of the best books I've read in long time. The way the characters overlap and intertwine is a magical mystery and journey throughout the lifetime of one little girl and how one event can trigger a lifetime of consequences. The two narrators including the author and two well known Iranian actors living in the US makes this book come more to life than if had read it Although I did listen to it twice to connect all the dots so to speak.... and it connects well. They way each chapter sums up then has a musical interlude and a lesson is learned or the chapter summed up in a wonderful way. Don't miss this book if you like reading about families, feelings and consequences.
What other book might you compare And the Mountains Echoed to and why?
I know this may seem strange but the movie "Pulp Fiction" comes to mind only in the way that the characters overlap and you learn more about them in later chapters, making this book somewhat of a mystery.
Have you listened to any of the narrators’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No, yet excellent performances. Love that the author is one of the narrators.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
When Pari the long lost sister of Abdullah meets and visits with Pari the daughter of Abdullah, her niece yet more her sister..

Confusing and boring
Revisado: 09-17-12
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
Someone who likes to figure out things.
Has The Tiger's Wife turned you off from other books in this genre?
Definitely
What about Susan Duerden and Robin Sachs ’s performance did you like?
Very excellent
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Maybe reading instead of listening but my book club didn't like get it either and we're not a bunch of kids.
Any additional comments?
Try another author, don't see how it can have been a best seller.
