Historia
Alma Katsu calls My Heart Is a Chainsaw “a homage to slasher films that also manages to defy and transcend genre.” On the surface is a story of murder in small-town America. But beneath is its beating heart: a biting critique of American colonialism, Indigenous displacement, and gentrification, and a heartbreaking portrait of a broken young girl who uses horror movies to cope with the horror of her own life.

Revisado: 06-05-22
I keep seeing reviews for how people can't get into it and..I. that seems like to me the book wasn't ur cup of tea not that it's a bad book. it's fine If it wasn't your cup of tea truly, but that does not make it a bad book. I really really enjoyed it and was crying laughing throughout I really enjoyed Jade as the protagonist and the way jades story is told with the events unfolding in her town is really amazing I hope Stephen keeps making stories like this ❤️

I think it was the accents that really threw me off as well as the pave of some of the dialogue. Still though it was kinda fun like I remember when I read it years ago.

Historia
On the morning of June 1, 1921, a white mob numbering in the thousands marched across the railroad tracks dividing black from white in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and obliterated a black community then celebrated as one of America's most prosperous. The Burning will recreate the town of Greenwood at the height of its prosperity, explore the currents of hatred, racism, and mistrust between its black residents and neighboring Tulsa's white population, narrate events leading up to and including Greenwood's annihilation, and document the subsequent silence that surrounded the tragedy.

Revisado: 03-05-20
A friend of mine mentioned this forgotten chapter of American history to me and I was shocked that in all my years I had never heard anything -not a word- about it. Unreal how even some of the personalities mentioned in the book had no idea of the occurrence. Again, difficult to listen to, hard to say you will enjoy the book, but important to hear and process.

As relevant now as when it was written.
Revisado: 06-26-18
... which is a sobering thought. There are times in the book difficult to relate to in 2018, but the central message and lesson are as important now as in 1917, 1941, 1950, 1965, 1991, and 2001. Its criticized for being flat, but I think in a way that is part of the point. I'm glad I listened to it.

Whew.
Revisado: 09-22-17
Published in 1935 it has some obviously dated material, but the author(s) can be forgiven their lack of access to hindsight. At nearly 50 hours in length it took me a couple of sittings (read, several weeks broken up over a couple of months of comment time.) to complete the book, but it was time well spent. Highly recommend this title. I know I will eventually complete the series. Unfortunately Will and Ariel didn't get to finish the history of the 20th century before becoming part of that history... they have left us an amazing work though.

Proper proportions make for a potent potion
Revisado: 04-21-17
Ingredients needed for a delicious arcane gumshoe who is into anachronistic apparel.
Finely grind up Essence of Millhone
Add to a heating cauldron of various traditions including brujerià, wicca, and voodoo.
Slowly stir in, legendary ghost stories, oogly booglies, little jumps, and the occasional fright until the pot stirs itself.
Once boiling add a freshly Butchered, Hairy eye of Sleuth.
Let simmer through the sound system for eight hours and you have the perfect recipe for a very interesting witchy detective character and series.
I really enjoyed this book. The author puts together many of the aspects I enjoy in other fiction. I like the mystery, the magick, a strong female character who we can relate to because she still has her faults. Mostly I like the voice which I feel is bright overall. Sure there are shadows, but without shadows we can't see dimension.
This is my new series.

If you are into this, you'll totally be into this
Revisado: 12-15-16
I'm a gamer, totally lame and proud of it. So for me this book fills that warm little niche I have in my soul for ephemera that compliments canon. It is very complimentary to the Cthulhu Mythos Encyclopedia building on what is already out there and weaving new possibilities into the stories. I listened to it once, went back through laughed at some of the simply diabolically elegant stories presented and immediately purchased it in hard copy.
This is obviously a fan-boy review, I'm good with that. I think if you are into this kind of thing then you are totally going to be into this book.
So why the four stars in Performance and Story? It's not due to disliking the reader, in fact for all the engineered words, languages, simply fabricated -stuff- he does an amazing job, brava, I simply would have liked just a little more with regard to the auction and hints as to the disposition of the library. A thread to pull.

Described by the New York Times as "arguably the most important intellectual alive," Noam Chomsky is known throughout the world for his highly influential writings on language and politics. Featuring two of Chomsky's most popular and enduring books in one omnibus volume, On Language contains some of the noted linguist and political critic's most informal and accessible work to date, making it an ideal introduction to his thought.

Good, but difficult when commuting to work. I made a ton of bookmarks in this one for later review. As you can well imagine some aspects of this work require the hardcopy, pen and paper, and some quiet time to contemplate.
