Historia
Pulled out of (forced) retirement by his old protégé, Peter Guillam, George Smiley must determine who among the high command at the British Secret Intelligence Service is in fact a Soviet spy—one who’s been climbing their way up the ranks for decades. The stakes are high: the mole is behind more than one failed operation and has lain waste to some of their best informant networks.

Historia
The Eternal Decline and Fall of Rome tells the stories of the people who built their political and literary careers around promises of Roman renewal as well as those of the victims they blamed for causing Rome's decline. The story begins during the Roman Republic just after 200 BC. It proceeds through the empire of Augustus and his successors, traces the Roman loss of much of western Europe in the fifth century AD, and follows Roman history until its fall in 1453.

Revisado: 12-17-24
Comprehensive : the narrative moves along even though the book covers Rome in the European West, Rome in the middle East.
Pre Christian Rome And Christian Rome in the East and in the West.
Iconoclasm and The role of the popes. The Crusades. The differences between easter and western churches The Holy Roman Empire even gets a shout out. As does
The way iconoclasm took hold in the Eastern Roman Empire. How the papacy in the West was able to get its mojo back, Charlemagne gets a nod.
It carries through the Ottoman capture of Constantinople and finally it concludes with a discussion of how Machiavelli and the Montesquieu used the idea of and the history of Rome to build out their thoughts. Finally the story told in Gibbon’s decline and rise book gets discussed and analyzed.

Historia
It’s the early 1960s, and the newly built Berlin Wall looms large. British intelligence officer Alec Leamas, caught in its shadow, feels the chill all too keenly: the preceding years have seen nearly every member of his Berlin spy network either murdered or captured. To him, the prospect of a desk job feels more like solace than purgatory. When he’s summoned to London by Control, it seems as though he’s finally being called home.

Historia
Returning Marx to the Victorian confines of the 19th century, Jonathan Sperber, one of the United States' leading European historians, challenges many of our misconceptions of this political firebrand turned London journalist. In this deeply humanizing portrait, Marx no longer is the Olympian soothsayer, divining the dialectical imperatives of human history, but a scholar-activist whose revolutionary Weltanschauung was closer to Robespierre's than to those of 20th-century Marxists.

Matter of fact, sympathetic but not hagiographic.

A lot of attention paid to the differences between the Hegelian influences and the later positivist influences on Marx. A lot of time devoted to Marx as an activist, Marx as a family man and the money struggles that plagued him. Really a fun read

Wow. Impressive width and deep analysis combine
Revisado: 05-20-24
Scope is enormous, the idea of Eurasia as a particular geographic location for ideas and habits and large states rather than Europe and Asia is convincing. I thought more about The ubiquity of empires small and large. No hero worshipping but no bashing of victors either. A Really intelligent book. Hard to put down. Not David Harvey and definitely not Niall Ferguson (thank goodness)

Historia
In this fascinating new history, Judith Stein argues that in order to understand our current economic crisis we need to look back to the 1970s and the end of the age of the factory - the era of postwar liberalism, created by the New Deal, whose practices, high wages, and regulated capital produced both robust economic growth and greater income equality.

Interesting guests. I Really enjoyed the Hanebrink interview. The whole Nazi wackiness turned real because it appealed to long held ideas percolating below the surface and some savage types played the propaganda game well at a time society was in an economic crisis

I learned a lot. From the consequences of the collapse of the Ottoman and Austro Hungarian empires, to the extraordinary violence on the western and eastern fronts and the international impact of the British and French involvement of troops from their colonies…and much more. Great narration to boot.

Evans interweaves a broad narrative of the war’s progress with viscerally affecting personal testimony from a wide range of people - from generals to front-line soldiers, from Hitler Youth activists to middle-class housewives. The Third Reich at War lays bare the dynamics of a nation more deeply immersed in war than any society before or since. Fresh insights into the conflict’s great events are here, from the invasion of Poland to the Battle of Stalingrad to Hitler’s suicide in the bunker.

Historia
Egypt has long set the paradigm for Arab autocracy. It is the keeper of the peace with Israel and the cornerstone of the American-backed regional order. So when Egyptians rose up to demand democracy in 2011, their 30 months of freedom convulsed the whole region. Now a new strongman, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, is building a dictatorship so severe some call it totalitarian. The economy sputters, an insurgency simmers, Christians suffer, and the Israeli military has been forced to intervene. But some in Washington - including President Trump - applaud Sisi as a crucial ally.
