A really fresh take on a familiar story
Revisado: 03-26-25
I know there's a long tradition or history for popular stories told from the perspective of a character that isn't generally the central one. The Last Magdalene fits well in that. Donna Conrad tells a story that introduces us to a woman often discussed but much less often centered. Miriam struggles to find agency and a life in a world ruled by men while part of a sect that is increasingly diminishing in its authority and power. Her research into who Mary Magdalene was gets woven into a narrative that is compelling, difficult, heartbreaking, and empowering. She visits familiar moments and players in the tale of Jesus we might be familiar with, but from a perspective most probably aren't.
Marnie Sher tells Conrad's story perfectly. She brings the setting to life and navigates an impressive cast of characters with amazing distinction between so many, displaying humor and gravity and pain in equal measures. She makes a compelling story an engaging listen. If this is the first of a series, I'm looking forward to the rest!

A great listen for gardeners of every level!
Revisado: 03-26-24
This is a great book for the beginner, casual gardener, and even budding professional. Kristine draws you into the world of dahlias, explaining all aspects and introducing you to issues and concepts that you probably have never even thought about. One of the great things about this book is that Kristine pulls in the experience of growers from all over, so regardless of where you live or what your climate is like you will have options and ideas of how to go about growing your dahlias.
As a person who mostly only reads audiobooks, this book was an absolute delight which may seem unusual for a book that's about growing flowers. Marnie Sher's warm and friendly voice perfectly matches the accessible and easy tone of the book. She conveys the complicated concepts as clearly and easy to follow as the simple parts. It's a great listen for walking the dogs, riding in the car, and even working in the garden.

Historia
Carson quickly realizes this person who’d had delivered the photo to NYPD HQ on Mulberry Street may be a more advanced photographer than him and his interest is piqued. Riis introduces him to this detective, Angelo Delmonico (of the famous restauranteur family) and he finds the scientific-minded detective and he are of a similar mind regarding this new killer. Together with teenager Kelley McCarthy, a pioneering female urban explorer "who goes where even the rats don’t go", the trio chase an ingenious and elusive serial killer who is murdering little girls and turning them into human dolls.

fun listen with delightful characters
Revisado: 02-10-24
It's a fun romp of historical fiction. Crawford gives you entertaining takes on the names you recognize and creates delightful characters for the names you don't. Yes, the story is a bit of a mystery, but the book is 100% the characters.
And speaking of the characters. Marnie Sher gives them life in a way that matches the writing perfectly and gives all the characters a unique voice. She's makes it fun listen cover to cover!
