Historia
When Zoe Faust sees the ghost of a murdered young woman, is it really a spirit—or a flesh and blood woman who stopped aging because she’s a fellow alchemist? Sixteen years ago, high school student Ridley Price discovered a secret she planned to reveal through a party game—but someone killed her first. The baffling crime was never solved. Zoe’s friend Heather has always wondered: Which of the seven guests at the party killed Ridley? When the newly appeared ghost turns dangerous, threatening people they love, Zoe teams up with her gargoyle roommate to unmask the supposed specter.

Cute story, but I came for the alchemy and not the mystery.
More science, less scooby doo please.

Historia
At Montverre, an ancient and elite academy hidden high in the mountains, society's best and brightest are trained for excellence in the grand jeu—the great game—an arcane and mysterious competition that combines music, art, math, poetry, and philosophy. Léo Martin once excelled at Monteverre, but lost his passion for scholarly pursuits after a violent tragedy. He turned to politics instead, and became a rising star in the ruling party, until a small act of conscience cost him his career. Now, he has been exiled back to Monteverre, his fate uncertain.

Excellent Performance and Prose - But No Magic
Revisado: 12-24-23
Hoping this helps someone who would otherwise make the same mistake that I did.
This is a story about something almost equivalent to a monastery in Nazi germany.
There is no game.
The tag "magical realism" is used in the classical sense and not the contemporary sense (like The Magicians by Lev Grossman).
If you're being recommended this because you enjoyed The Magicians or Scholomance, you're in the wrong neighborhood.
Even so, Collins is an EXCELLENT writer - the prose is quite masterful. Woolf also does a superb job on the performance. Even so, this was like ordering a hamburger at a restaurant and being surprised it is not made of ham. Entirely my fault, definitely edible, but not what I was after.

Historia
Spensa made it out of the Nowhere, but what she saw in the space between the stars has changed her forever. She came face to face with the Delvers, and finally got answers to the questions she’s had about her own strange Cytonic gifts. The Superiority didn’t stop fighting for galactic dominance while she was gone, though. Spensa’s team, Skyward Flight, was able to hold Winzik off, and even collect allies to help with the cause, but it’s only a matter of time until humanity—and the rest of the galaxy—falls.

Crosses the line into distasteful.
Revisado: 10-18-23
DNF. Can't believe I couldn't get through a free 2-hour audiobook, but here we are. I'm definitely of the school that the educated mind can listen to anything without getting upset. I understand when authors write parody or add objectionable beliefs to their characters for the purpose of development. This book is none of those things. It's an unabashed bashing of just about everything that doesn't bleed conservative. So much so that it interfered with my ability to enjoy it. The narrator did a great job, but should be ashamed of having to do so for such ideological garbage.

Historia
A groundbreaking work of science fiction, The Left Hand of Darkness tells the story of a lone human emissary to Winter, an alien world whose inhabitants can change their gender. His goal is to facilitate Winter's inclusion in a growing intergalactic civilization. But to do so he must bridge the gulf between his own views and those of the completely dissimilar culture that he encounters. Embracing the aspects of psychology, society, and human emotion on an alien world, The Left Hand of Darkness stands as a landmark achievement.

Historia
Even when finding oneself engaged in interstellar war, good form must be observed. Our story is set thousands of years after the Terran Exodus, where two powerful, planet-dominating families - the elegant House Jakabitus and the less refined Hahn Empire - have reached a critical point in their generations-long war. Master Hennik, the Hahn ruler's only son, has been captured, and the disposition of his internment may represent a last and welcome chance for peace.

Historia
The Great Recession has shuffled Clay Jannon out of his life as a San Francisco Web-design drone - and serendipity, sheer curiosity, and the ability to climb a ladder like a monkey has landed him a new gig working the night shift at Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore. But after just a few days on the job, Clay begins to realize that this store is even more curious than the name suggests. There are only a few customers, but they come in repeatedly and never seem to actually buy anything....

Plot is woven so tightly it could hold water.

Great plot, great narration. Off beat, clever and prescient. What begins as a mystery spirals into plot-centric exploration of ideas deep enough to stimulate without belaboring. The conclusion satisfying. Even better is the positive and hopeful, albeit unabashedly humanist tone.
Absolutely worth a full credit.
