Historia
The government is a vast, complex system that Americans pay for, rebel against, rely upon, dismiss, and celebrate. It’s also our shared resource for addressing the biggest problems of society. And it’s made up of people, mostly unrecognized and uncelebrated, doing work that can be deeply consequential and beneficial to everyone. Michael Lewis invited his favorite writers, including Casey Cep, Dave Eggers, John Lanchester, Geraldine Brooks, Sarah Vowell, and W. Kamau Bell, to join him in finding someone doing an interesting job for the government and writing about them.

Loved Lewis’ report on the mining engineer. Hearing other voices was cool but it’s no “Fifth Risk”

Historia
Two years ago, a hostile Prime Minister launched the Monochrome inquiry, investigating "historical over-reaching" by the British Secret Service “to investigate historical over-reaching.” Monochrome’s mission was to ferret out any hint of misconduct by any MI5 officer—and allowed Griselda Fleet and Malcolm Kyle, the two civil servants seconded to the project, unfettered access to any and all confidential information in the Service archives in order to do so. But MI5’s formidable First Desk did not become Britain’s top spy by accident, and she has successfully thwarted the inquiry at every turn.

A well told & well crafted story that will please many Slough House fans & made me happy that I this came out instead of the next SH book because it’s more than worth the wait.

Historia
Timothy McVeigh wanted to start a movement. Speaking to his lawyers days after the Oklahoma City bombing, the Gulf War veteran expressed no regrets: killing 168 people was his patriotic duty. New York Times bestselling author Jeffrey Toobin traces the dramatic history and profound legacy of Timothy McVeigh, who once declared, “I believe there is an army out there, ready to rise up, even though I never found it.” But that doesn’t mean his army wasn’t there. With news-breaking reportage, Toobin details how McVeigh’s principles and tactics have flourished in the decades since his death in 2001.

Excellent as usual
Revisado: 02-19-25
Excellent information presented clearly and logically. Mr Toobin is a natural teacher. He also is a perfect narrator for his books. Reminds me of Halberstam as a chronicler of contemporary American history. I’m from Idaho & descended from “Mormon terrorists” so not surprised by this movement but shocked at its mainstreaming. Our local incidents don’t make the national news, not even the armed takeover of a federal building. Despite history it’s hard not to be fearful of the wildfire this movement has become.

Interesting mystery
Revisado: 02-11-25
I like the setting & descriptions. The setup & dual plots & subplots were tidy & believable. There were no gimmicks. Woman- centered realistically with full characters
The narration was marred by the narrator’s practice of affecting a fake deep voice for male characters. This always sounds ridiculous & is needlessly distracting.

Little action, character based.
I don’t usually like this genre but this was very well done. Attention to details of the setting & events was meticulous & the characters were well done. The narration was so good but I kept forgetting it was Meryl Streep - she was just in the story.

Not great overall
Revisado: 07-21-24
Good: plot, some characters with potential
Bad: Incomplete characters, plot goes everywhere, too much of the book is narration of thoughts by the protagonist. And those thoughts are all over the map. Someone should hand the protagonist the Sherlock Holmes stories. After some last minute redirection the resolutions of plot & characters piled up at the end like a welcome train wreck.
It was so maddenly only partially gripping that I had to start it over a few times

Historia
For Detective Sam Porter, the words "Father, forgive me" conjure memories long forgotten; a past intentionally buried. For Anson Bishop, these three words connect a childhood to the present as he unleashes a truth concealed for decades. Found written on cardboard near each body, these words link multiple victims to a single killer - discovered within minutes of each other in both Chicago and South Carolina - clearly connected yet separated by impossible miles.

Historical events. Not cliché
Revisado: 06-12-24
Narration & music excellent. Description of settings & events made them imaginable. Characters were not really developed but were developed enough.
They weren’t as realistic or memorable as the action. The action held my interest.
Now I have to read a nonfiction about these events.

Historia
With his epic novels of alternate history, Harry Turtledove shares a stunning vision of what might have been - and what might still be - if one moment in history were changed. In the Worldwar and Colonization series, an ancient, highly advanced alien species found itself locked in a bitter struggle with a distant, rebellious planet: Earth. For those defending the Earth, this all-out war for survival supercharged human technology, made friends of foes, and turned allies into bitter enemies.

Very different from the other 3, or 7, preceding books
Revisado: 03-31-24
It was too dull, repetitive & predictable. It was more repetitive than other books - almost copy paste from prior books or even prior chapters. A little action & one unsurprising twist & dull/predictable voyages & characters underwent predictable or uninteresting change. It was not at all typical of this author. Narrator required 1.3 speed & hissed a lot.
