Historia
When her estranged mother dies, Stella is left with an unusual inheritance: a one-way plane ticket and a note reading “Go to Paris.” Stella is hardly cut out for adventure; a traumatic childhood has kept her confined to the strict routines of her comfort zone. But when her boss encourages her to take time off, Stella resigns herself to honoring her mother’s last wishes.

Pretentious
Revisado: 02-08-25
I really wanted to like this book. I admire Ruth Reichl and I love Paris. The cameos of famous Parisian people and places were fun. But honestly, the book is full of pretentious, self-involved people bagging on the mom for being self-involved and pretentious. And truly, is there anything more obnoxious than wealthy people pretending that money doesn’t matter?

Historia
In the spring of 2020, Lara’s three daughters return to the family's orchard in Northern Michigan. While picking cherries, they beg their mother to tell them the story of Peter Duke, a famous actor with whom she shared both a stage and a romance years before at a theater company called Tom Lake. As Lara recalls the past, her daughters examine their own lives and relationship with their mother, and are forced to reconsider the world and everything they thought they knew.

Disappointing
Revisado: 01-21-25
This started out pretty good but I probably wouldn’t have finished this book if it hadn’t been read by Meryl Streep. I’m glad I did though, as it picked up again in the end. Maybe the middle was just too long. It’s an interesting device for this to be a story told by a mother to her daughters. Given the content though it seems a bit icky.

Historia
With a supply of sarin nerve gas as well as explosives and automatic weapons, members of a radical group who believe they have been betrayed by a high-level Middle East negotiator decide to seek revenge by attacking a Long Island high school attended by the negotiator's daughters. It is against the horrific shadow of this approaching attack, that The Mean reveals the inner conflicts of Central High School through the humorous, sometimes sardonic, viewpoint of the school's assistant principal.

Terrible
Revisado: 03-21-18
This is one of the worst books I’ve ever read. The plot is a jumble, and the characters - particularly the women - are unflattering stereotypes. If you’re going to give your book a title like “the mean” you should be aware that people who know some math might read it. So you might not want to have your nerdy character give a finite decimal expansion as the *exact* value of the golden mean. Do a little homework for heaven sakes. And that’s the problem with this story. It’s populated with characters the author doesn’t seem to know very well. None of them ring true. All of this is exacerbated by the authors reading. The accents he does for his ethnic stereotypes and the shrill falsetto he puts on for his harpy females makes it very difficult to listen to this book. And don’t get me started about the silly supernatural plot line.

Historia
What could possibly make a proper gentleman come completely undone? What if Elizabeth Bennet accepted the proposal of another before she met Mr. Darcy again? In Abigail Reynolds' bold and playful retelling of the Austen classic, a devastated Mr. Darcy must decide how far he is willing to go to win the woman he loves. Consumed by jealousy, he knows that winning her will throw them both into scandal and disgrace, but losing her is unbearable. Mr. Darcy is going to have to fight for his love, and his life. . .

A bit of a let down
Revisado: 05-14-17
I was hoping Lizzie would be more rational and more empowered. Frankly, not much new here besides the sex scenes.
