A DIFFICULT LISTEN
Revisado: 06-19-21
This one is a tangle of disconnected vignettes with no intelligible plot line. The stage is the late years of imperial India and touches upon many of the sensitive issues between the colonists and the native Indians. Lots of local color and lore but no real story to follow.. Can't recommend.

Another Connelley winner (but I hated the music)!
Revisado: 03-28-21
Good yarn, well-researched and like all Connelley's stories, immensely readable. I was surprised at the number of negative reviews, most focusing on the bone-headed actions of the 'hero'. It is still a Connelley and well worth the read. This reading was unique to me, with strange background music which was distracting and annoying. I hope this is not the start of a new trend.

THIS SHORT BOOK WAS AWFUL!
Revisado: 07-14-19
Childlike plot, with the character development of a comic book. Utterly illogical events woven together in an unrealistic thread. Was this really a serious attempt? The reader's performance was poor, and his attempts at replicating foreign accents was ridiculous. Is it even possible to deliver a Russian accent, a Minnesotan accent, a New Englander accent and a Spanish accent effectively in a 6-hour narration? Not in this book. This one is a real "dog".

Historia
When Robin Ellacott opens an unexpected delivery, she is horrified to discover that it contains a woman's severed leg. Her boss, private detective Cormoran Strike, is less surprised but just as alarmed. He suspects that four people from his past could be responsible - and any one of them is capable of sustained and unspeakable brutality. With the police focusing on the one suspect Strike has essentially ruled out, he and Robin take matters into their own hands and delve into the dark and twisted worlds of the other three men.

"GALBRAITH'S" BEST YET

Any additional comments?
I was intrigued to see how the authoress of the Harry Potter series might do as a mystery/thriller writer. Her first two novels were well-written and entertaining. But, Career of Evil was the best by far. She seems to be hitting her stride. Fascinating characters and plot twists. Highly recommended. I hope she keeps it up.

LEAVE THE NARRATION TO THE PROS
Revisado: 12-15-15
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
Vowell is a well-respected historian but an inferior narrator. Her performance interferes with an otherwise interesting and dryly humorous take on an important player in US history. I would have liked it a lot more if George Guidell, for example, was doing the narration.
How could the performance have been better?
Get one of the pros to narrate the clever and interesting dialogue.

Historia
A severed arm, found buried in the White House Rose Garden. A lethal message with terrible consequences for the Presidency. And a hidden secret in one family's past that will have repercussions for the entire nation. There are stories no one knows. Hidden stories. I find those stories for a living. To most, it looks like Beecher White has an ordinary job. A young staffer with the National Archives in Washington, DC, he's responsible for safekeeping the government's most important documents...and, sometimes, its most closely held secrets.

REFUSED TO GIVE UP
Revisado: 08-28-15
What disappointed you about The President's Shadow?
I just could not wait until this one was finished. The plot kept gettingt more tired, the characters more ridiculous. Another book about killing the President? I should have stopped but I stubbornly kept slogging along. A very unsatisfying read/listen.
What could Brad Meltzer have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Made it about ten minutes long.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The President's Shadow?
A better question . . . which one(s) would I have kept.

QUIIRKY CHARACTERS BUT VERY ENTERTAINING
Revisado: 08-17-15
Where does The Marco Effect rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
I tried Adlerr-Olsen first Department Q book and was hooked. One alert, however, and that is this series is one that you will want to tackle in order, Starting with Book 2 or 4, for example will leave the reader puzzled over some of the things that have been mentioned in past books.
What about Graeme Malcolm’s performance did you like?
Remarkable ability to master several different accents quite effectively.

What would have made Invasion of Privacy better?
A mourning widow and an alcoholic outwit the corrupt FBI?? Bad guys are always shot and the good guys always are able to duck? I liked most of Reich's earlier books but this one is just too hokey.

NOT UP TO SILVA's STANDARDS
Revisado: 07-14-15
What did you like best about The English Spy? What did you like least?
Allon is one of thriller literature's most interesting characters . . . maybe what Silva needs to do is to graft in another super hero before Allon gets too old to run and shoot.
Would you recommend The English Spy to your friends? Why or why not?
This one is to much "formula" and refers so much of the plot back to previous Silva novels that I feel sorry for a reader who is listening to the English Spy as their first Silva book. Just not creative or believable enough to rate up there with Silva's best.
Have you listened to any of George Guidall’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Lots and lots. He is the best in the business
Did The English Spy inspire you to do anything?
Hope that Silva puts more into his next work. His best are five-stars all the way.

Historia
Sonny Lofthus is a strangely charismatic and complacent young man. Sonny’s been in prison for a dozen years, nearly half his life. The inmates who seek out his uncanny abilities to soothe leave his cell feeling absolved. They don’t know or care that Sonny has a serious heroin habit - or where or how he gets his uninterrupted supply of the drug. Or that he’s serving time for other peoples’ crimes. Sonny took the first steps toward addiction when his father took his own life rather than face exposure as a corrupt cop. Now Sonny is the seemingly malleable center of a whole infrastructure of corruption....

ANOTHER POWERFUL, WELL-WRITTEN NESBO NOVEL
Revisado: 06-12-14
Where does The Son: A Novel rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
I have liked all of Nesbo's books, but they are indeed dark novels. I can see why a lot of readers/listeners are put off by the grisly details and vivid descriptions of crime and the drug scene. But, entertaining and creative they are.
What about Gildart Jackson’s performance did you like?
Somber and forceful, just exactly the mood that I think Nesbo would have recommended.
